I Was His Wife, Then His Widow, Then No One's But My Own novel Chapter 469

Xander Harrison drove his brand new Rolls-Royce Cullinan out of the garage. Nora sat in the passenger seat, while the two kids occupied the back, chattering nonstop.

Cassie kept pressing her face against the window, gazing outside. As they passed a sprawling field, she let out an excited gasp. "Mom, look at that cow! It's so cute!"

Nora smiled. "A cow? Is it cute?"

Caught up in Cassie's excitement, Bonnie joined in. The two little heads pressed close to the window, their noses almost smudging the glass.

Nora turned to look at them, unable to wipe the brilliant smile off her face.

Xander steered with one hand, reaching over with his other to intertwine his fingers with Nora's.

His palm was dry and comforting. Nora glanced down at their joined hands, her lips curving into a soft smile.

Once the car left the city limits, the traffic thinned out significantly.

Nora leaned back against her seat, watching the vast farmlands and small towns roll by, feeling a rare sense of profound peace.

She suddenly remembered how, a long time ago, she used to dream of a moment exactly like this. A family taking a weekend drive to the countryside, the kids happily chatting in the back, her husband driving quietly beside her.

Except back then, the man in her fantasies had been Finnegan. She had truly hoped his death was just some cruel joke played by the universe, and that he was still alive.

Well, he was indeed alive, but she didn't need him anymore.

Now, Xander had given her the life she had always wanted, as if she were meant to experience all of this with him from the very beginning.

As they passed a rest stop, Xander glanced over at her. "Are you tired? Thirsty? I packed a thermos in your bag with some fresh date and longan tea. I made it this morning. Drink it while it's hot."
