Nora's heart skipped a beat as a suffocating wave of unease slowly washed over her.
"Who is it?"
Clara shoved her phone screen directly in front of Nora's face, her own eyes wide with shock.
It was Finnegan Fletcher.
But Finnegan didn't have a scar on his forehead.
Clara didn't notice the color drain completely from Nora's face. She kept grinding her teeth as she ranted, "All the clues line up perfectly. At the bar that night, he told me his name was Chet. But the hotel registry info he gave was totally fake, and so was his phone number. The guy practically vanished into thin air. I had to drop thousands of dollars on a private investigator just to track down these breadcrumbs. The P.I. told me he recently popped up stateside, so I booked the first flight back without wasting a single second."
Nora furrowed her brow, repeating the name softly. "Chet..."
Clara froze, finally noticing how pale Nora looked. "You know him, don't you?"
Nora took a deep, steadying breath. She couldn't be one hundred percent certain, but all the pieces fit her horrifying suspicion. "I think I do. There's a very high chance this man is Frederick Fletcher, Finnegan's twin brother. He was supposed to have died in a plane crash five years ago, but he survived. He came back, and he has that exact scar on his forehead, just like you described."
The phone slipped from Clara's grip, clattering loudly against the leather seat. "What did you just say? Finnegan's twin brother? You mean the brother of the monster you told me about—the one who destroyed your family?"
Nora's gaze darkened with absolute gravity. "Yes. That's him. Which is exactly why I suspect his little encounter with you at the bar was completely premeditated."
