"No problem. With me guarding you, you can strut through the Nineteenth Firmament without fear."
Master Veridian slapped his chest as he spoke.
Jared looked at the old man's smug confidence and could not help laughing.
"Guarding us?" Gwendolyn still felt awkward about it. "Senior, you are at peak Golden Immortal Level Eight. Isn't it a waste to have you act as our bodyguard?"
Someone at that level was nearly invincible in the Nineteenth Firmament.
And Jared had actually asked him to work as a bodyguard.
He really dared say anything.
Master Veridian waved a hand as if it did not matter.
"A waste? Nonsense. You gave me ten million crystals. If someone swings a blade at you, I block it. Fair and proper. Besides..."
He glanced at the cultivators still whispering around them, then lowered his voice.
"Girl, do you have any idea what kind of person stands behind your man?"
"What kind of person?" Gwendolyn froze.
She truly did not know.
She had never met Mr. Sanders. After they entered the celestial realm, Mr. Sanders had rarely appeared, so it was normal that she knew nothing about him.
"A terrifying one. Terrifying enough to destroy..."
"Destroy you with one slap?" Gwendolyn asked before he finished.
"Not me." Master Veridian leaned in, acting mysterious. "The whole Nineteenth Firmament."
Gwendolyn was shocked.
Destroy the Nineteenth Firmament with one slap?
What kind of strength would that take?
If Jared had someone like that behind him, why had he never told her?
"What are you whispering about, Senior?" Jared asked.
"Nothing." Master Veridian grinned. "I was telling her how powerful I am."
"All right. Then I will be counting on you from now on," Jared said.
"Call me Old Veridian." Master Veridian bared his yellow teeth. "All this 'Senior' business makes me sound old."
Gwendolyn watched his shameless smile and smiled despite herself.
"Senior, can you beat Corvin Skyreach from the Golden Crow clan?"
"Of course."
Master Veridian thumped his chest again.
"I have wandered around the Nineteenth Firmament for years, and I have never met anyone I could not handle. Do not look at these old bones and think I am weak. Once I make a move, those so-called geniuses cannot survive three exchanges with me.
"If Corvin saw me, he would kneel and call me Grandpa. If you do not believe me, we can walk into the Golden Crow clan right now and test it."
"No, no. That is fine." Gwendolyn quickly waved him off.
Jared smiled and shook his head. He did not bother exposing the brag.
Still, Master Veridian's cultivation was real.
Peak Golden Immortal Level Eight was absolutely top tier in the Nineteenth Firmament.
With him around, Jared would not need to personally deal with most enemies below Golden Immortal Level Eight.
As for Corvin Skyreach, he was also peak Golden Immortal Level Eight.
There was no way he would kneel and call Master Veridian Grandpa.
"Let's go back to Bermu City first," Jared said. "I still need to see City Lord Whitmoor."
He brought Master Veridian, the young acolyte, and Gwendolyn back toward Bermu City.
The cultivators who had come out of the tower reacted in different ways. Some thanked Jared before leaving. Some were still regretting that they had not found any real treasure.
Either way, the tower farce had come to an end.
...
After returning to Bermu City, Jared went directly to the City Lord's estate.
Bennett Whitmoor was in his study handling official matters. When he saw Jared enter with an unfamiliar white-haired old man and a young acolyte, doubt flickered through his eyes.
"Mr. Chance, this gentleman is..."
"A friend," Jared said. "Master Veridian. Peak Golden Immortal Level Eight."
Bennett's pupils tightened.
Peak Golden Immortal Level Eight?
In Bermu City, even he, the City Lord, was only peak Golden Immortal Level Seven. There had never been a second Golden Immortal Level Eight expert here.
This sloppy-looking old man was actually peak Golden Immortal Level Eight?
Bennett studied Master Veridian.
