Chapter 123 Her Scheme Begins

Agnes dropped her luggage in the hotel room and collapsed on the bed, too tired to even shower.
She thought, Once I pick up the ruby tomorrow, I can go back to Grandridge.
She shook her head, suddenly remembering all the missed calls from Raymond.
She figured something urgent must have happened, so she quickly called him back.
As soon as the call connected, Raymond’s voice blasted through the speaker, frantic and intense.
“Agnes, where are you? Why haven’t you answered my calls? Did you even see how many times I called you? What on earth is going on with you?”
Agnes winced at the barrage of questions, holding the phone away from her ear.
She listened to Raymond’s voice, sharp and desperate. “Hello? Agnes, are you even listening to me?” ·
She finally answered, “I’m here. Stop yelling. I’m calling you back, aren’t I? What do you want?”
Raymond shot back, “Of course I have something to say. Where did you go last night? Why didn’t you pick up? Are you with Neal?”

of Agnes.
Agnes snapped, “Would you stop making things up? I was at the hospital last night. Rebecca slipped in the bathroom, and the doctor said she needed to stay for observation.”
Raymond’s fury faded a bit. He hadn’t slept at all, his mind tormented with every nightmare scenario he could conjure.
He tried to keep his voice calm. “So, when are you coming back? I’ll come pick you up.”
Agnes paused, torn about whether to tell him she was in Velmara. They’d agreed to keep out of each other’s lives, but he refused to let go.
Maybe if she told him the truth, he’d finally back off.
Agnes said, “No need. I’ve got things to handle. I’ll be back in a few days.”
Raymond wasn’t satisfied. “Where are you, Agnes? What’s going on?”
Agnes fired back, “Raymond, are you really this controlling? Do I need to report my every move to you?”
Raymond demanded, “Are you with Neal?”
Agnes rolled her eyes. He was obsessed with the idea of her and Neal.
“I’m in Velmara. I’ll be back in a couple days.”
She couldn’t understand why she was even explaining herself. She should’ve just hung up and let him stew.
Raymond exploded on the other end. “What? Velmara? Are you insane, Agnes? Do you have any idea what kind of place that is? Why didn’t you check with me first? Who are you there with? Get back here right now!”
Agnes had had enough. Why’s he overreacting? She didn’t owe him an explanation.
She didn’t have to justify her choices. Who did he think he was?
Agnes said, “Raymond, that’s enough. If you don’t have anything else to say, I’m hanging up. I’ll be back in a few days. You should go home and apologize to your dad. There’s nothing between us anymore. My life isn’t your concern, so worry about your own business.”
