Chapter 163 A Clue from the Past

In the corner of a cabinet, she found a small box. The handkerchief was inside, just like she expected.

Agnes took it out and looked at it carefully. She checked it over and over, but nothing seem special.

Just as she was about to put it back, she noticed a loose thread at one corner.

The thread was a different color from the rest of the embroidery. And it was coming from inside.

She held the handkerchief up to the light. Faintly, she saw a row of dark marks in one corne She rubbed it with her fingers and realized there was a hidden layer.

Her heart skipped. She quickly pulled on the thread and carefully opened it. Inside, there wa thin piece of silk, almost like paper. It was so well hidden that no one would notice it at a glance.

There were a few embroidered words on it: Golden Cathedral. Barlow.

Agnes frowned. Golden Cathedral… Barlow… What did it mean?

Raymond looked at the words and thought for a moment.

“Agnes, do you remember when we were kids? Our families went to a cathedral together once. We even had a vegan meal there. I kept complaining because I wanted meat, and my mom ended up scolding me.”

He chuckled a little.

“You comforted me that day. You said you’d sneak me something good to eat later. I think that place was called Golden Cathedral.”

Agnes paused and thought. Yes, she remembered.

The cathedral wasn’t far from where they used to live. Back then, they had even walked there instead of driving.

Without wasting time, the two of them took the handkerchief and headed straight for the cathedral.

When they arrived, they looked up at the sign. Golden Cathedral.

It was the same place. After all these years, it looked a little older, but nothing else had change The place was clean and well kept, inside and out.

There weren’t many people around. At the entrance, a young altar boy was sweeping fallen leaves.

Raymond walked over and asked him about Barlow.

As soon as the boy heard the name, he looked at them. “You’re looking for Father Barlow? Wh do you need?”

Agnes stepped forward.

“Hello. We’d like to ask him a few questions. Would you mind taking us to him?”

The boy shook his head. “Father Barlow spends most of his time in quiet prayer. He doesn’t lil to be disturbed. If you’re here to pray, I can help you instead.”

Agnes took out the small box and handed it to him. “Could you show him this?”

The boy looked puzzled. “What is it?”

“A handkerchief,” Agnes said. “It has ‘Golden Cathedral’ and ‘Barlow’ embroidered on it. We don’t know what it means, so we came here to ask.”

The boy opened the box and glanced at it. Sure enough, the words were there.

“Alright,” he said. “Please wait here. I’ll go ask him.”

“Thank you,” Raymond said.

After the boy left, Agnes looked around the cathedral.

Her thoughts drifted back to her childhood.

She used to get sick often. Daisy would bring her here to pray, hoping she would stay safe and healthy.

Strangely enough, after that, Agnes really did stop getting sick as much.

Later, when Raymond and his family moved nearby, the two families would often come here together. They would pray and sometimes share a quiet meal.

If they hadn’t moved away, they probably would have kept coming every year. Agnes mind kept working.

Not long after, the altar boy returned.

“Father Barlow would like to see you,” he said. “Please follow me.”

Agnes and Raymond followed him to a small room behind the cathedral.

Inside, an old priest sat quietly in a simple robe. His eyes were lowered, hands clasped, murmuring a prayer.

eyes.

He picked up the small box and looked at it. “Is this yours?”

Agnes nodded. She remembered him. He had been here since the first time she ever came to this cathedral.

His features were still the same, though time had left its marks on his face.

The old priest looked at them more closely, then smiled. “You’ve both grown up,” he said gently. “If you hadn’t come here in person, I might not have recognized you.”

Raymond smiled. “Father Barlow, you remember us?”

“Of course,” Father Barlow said with a soft chuckle. “The little boy who cried every time he had to eat vegetarian food and the little girl with rosy cheeks always standing next to him.”

All three of them laughed.

After a short chat, Father Barlow looked at the handkerchief again. His expression turned serious. He let out a quiet sigh. “What was meant to happen… has finally come.”

Agnes felt a chill. “Father, what does this handkerchief mean? My mother embroidered it. It has the name of this place-and yours.”

Father Barlow didn’t answer right away. Instead, he turned to the altar boy. “Go to my room,” he said. “Bring me the box from the bottom drawer of the cabinet.”

The boy nodded and left. A moment later, he returned with the box. Father Barlow opened it, took out a letter, and handed it to Agnes.
