(Jessica’s POV)

Fuck! He really means it! He wants to break up with me! Who did he ask before coming to this decision? Because no way in hell did he ask me. I’m not agreeing to it!

“I’m done with you, Jessica. Done with your schemes and your manipulation and your complete disregard for anyone but yourself.” His voice gets louder. “Going after my son was a line you should’ve never crossed.”

“But I love you-”

“No you don’t. You love the idea of loving me. Of beating Sabrina. Of proving you’re better.” He’s moving toward the door now. “But you’re not better. You’re worse. So much worse than you’ll ever know.”

“Where are you going?”

“To do what I should have done a year ago.”

He’s at the door now. One hand on the handle.

“After everything we’ve been through. You’re going back to her?”

“There was never a choice, Jessica. I was just too stupid to see it.” He looks back at me one last time. “I hope it was worth it. Whatever satisfaction you got from trying to destroy her. I hope it was worth destroying everything we shared. And just an FYI, Jake recorded you and Freya talking on his smartwatch. Good luck getting yourself out of this one.”

Then he’s gone. The door closing behind him with a finality that echoes through the apartment.

Sabrina.

He’s going back to Sabrina.

Sabrina. Sabrina. Sabrina!

It’s all that bitch’s fault!

She ruined my reputation, my career. And now she wants to steal

my

man?

No way in hell! Not in a million years!

I grab a jacket and run out the door, more determined than ever to bring this feud between us to an end.

Sabrina Moore will pay for coveting what’s mine!

(Ethan’s POV)

The drive back to Sabrina’s house feels endless even though it only takes fifteen minutes.

My hands grip the steering wheel tighter than necessary.

Chapter 15

In the span of twenty fucking hours, the woman Nove nearly got assaulted, and Jake-my son-had a knife pressed to his neck by a psychotic woman who couldn’t handle rejection.

I glance in the rearview mirror. Jake’s asleep in the backseat, his head resting against Sabrina’s shoulder. She’s staring out the window, her expression blank.

That worries me more than if she were crying.

“You okay?” I ask quietly, not wanting to wake Jake.

She doesn’t answer right away. Just keeps staring at nothing.

“Sabrina?”

“I don’t know.” Her voice sounds hollow. Distant. “Ask me tomorrow. Or next week. Right now I just feel…

numb.”

I reach over and take her hand. It’s cold. She doesn’t pull away but she doesn’t squeeze back either.

Behind us, Sophia’s white SUV follows close, her headlights steady in my mirror. She called three times during the drive, checking if we were okay, if we needed anything, threatening to hunt down Jessica herself and “make that bitch regret being born” after everyone safely gets home.

I appreciate her protective fury. But what Sabrina needs right now isn’t rage. It’s peace, security. And someone who can hold her together when she finally breaks down when the events of the day catch up to

her.

I pull into her driveway. Sophia parks right behind me.

Jake stirs when I turn off the engine. “Are we home?”

“Yeah, buddy. We’re home.”

I get out and open the back door. Jake climbs out slowly, his dinosaur backpack dragging on the ground. He looks exhausted, like he’d been through a roller-coaster ride.

Only what he experienced is much worse.

Sophia’s already out of her car, rushing toward them. “Baby, are you sure you’re okay? Do you need anything? Food? Water? I can stay the night if—”

“I’m okay, Aunt Sophia.” Jake’s trying to sound brave but his voice wavers. “Just really tired.”

“Of course you are.” She pulls him into a fierce hug. “You were so brave today. So incredibly brave.”

I help Sabrina out of the car. Her legs seem unsteady. I keep my hand on her lower back as we walk to the front door.

Inside, the house is quiet, almost as if nothing had happened today.

“Jake, go get ready for bed,” Sabrina says mechanically. “Brush your teeth. Put on your pajamas.”

“Okay, Mom.” He heads upstairs without his usual protests about bedtime being too early

The second he’s gone, Sophia rounds on me, “What’s your plan? Because I swear to God, Ethan, if Jessica and Freya aren’t in prison by tomorrow morning-”

“They will be.” My voice comes out harder than I intend. “I’ve already called my lawyers. Filed charges for kidnapping, assault with a weapon, child endangerment. They’re not walking away from this.”

“Good. Because I want them buried so deep they never see daylight again.” Sophia’s hands are shaking. I

notice for the first time that she’s been holding it together by sheer force of will. “Jake could have…”

“But he wasn’t. He’s safe. He’s home. And those women will pay for what they did.”

Sabrina sinks onto the couch, staring at her hands. “After what Jessica tried to do to me this morning, I should have been more careful. I just never expected her to be so vile as to actually target a kid.”

“Some people are just like that. They have no bottom line.” I crouch in front of her. “You shouldn’t blame yourself. This isn’t your fault.”

She finally looks at me, and the anguish in her eyes makes my chest tighten. “I’m his mother. I’m supposed to protect him. And I let him go to school like it was just another normal day while Jessica was out there planning-”

“You couldn’t have known,” Sophia interrupts. “None of us could. Jessica’s insane. That’s not on you.”

“She held a knife to his throat, Sophia.” Sabrina’s voice breaks completely now. “My baby. She could have- if you hadn’t arrived when you did-”

She doesn’t finish. Just dissolves into sobs.

I pull her against my chest, holding her while she cries. Sophia sits beside us, one hand on Sabrina’s back, her own eyes wet.

We stay like that until her sobs turn to hiccups. Until exhaustion wins over emotion.

“You should get some rest,” I say gently. “Both of you.”

“I’m staying the night,” Sophia announces. “I’ll sleep on the couch. Just in case.”

I want to argue, because I want to stay with them too. But I’ve never stayed the night before, and I can see Sabrina needs her best friend right now more than she needs me.

“Call me if anything happens,” I tell them both.

Sabrina nods but doesn’t meet my eyes.

I head for the door, every instinct screaming at me to turn back.

But Sophia’s here. And Sabrina will feel more comfortable with her staying then me.

So leaving one last instruction to lock the door, and set the alarms, I walk out the door.
