Laila noticed what he was thinking and gently rubbed his hair. “Don’t worry. Your grandparents and your uncle all miss you very much. They just don’t believe you’re still alive. Once they see you, they’ll be very happy.”
Raymond leaned against his aunt. His sharp little chin lifted slightly.
He opened his mouth and tried to make a sound. A hoarse breath scraped through his throat, but no words came out.
His head slowly drooped.
He wondered if they’d dislike him now that he had become a mute and a cripple.
After hesitating for a while, he slowly wrote in Laila’s palm again. “Will they dislike me?”
Laila’s heart ached.
She pulled him into her arms and gently patted his back. “Silly child. They’ll be overjoyed to see you. How could they possibly dislike you? Don’t overthink it. They’ll be very happy.”
But Raymond still wasn’t sure.
During the two years he spent begging on the streets, he had been driven away, sneered at, punched, and kicked countless times.
People looked at him as if he were a useless stray blocking their path.
He felt that their so–called disbelief was actually because they looked down on him for being a wanderer, for having a crippled leg, and for being mute.
So when they reached Samson’s den, he was reluctant to get out of the carriage, hiding behind the curtain and shaking his head at Laila.
She patiently persuaded him, “Don’t be scared, Raymond. I’ve met your uncle before. He misses you very much. Everyone misses you. It’s true.”
Raymond still shook his head. He pointed to his throat, then to his leg. His eyes were filled with grievance.
Laila sighed inwardly. He had already begun to feel inferior.
She stepped forward and spoke to the guards, “Please inform them. I’m Laila from the Silvermoon Pack I’ve brought Raymond to visit the elders.”
One of the guards leaned over to look, but the child hiding in the carriage couldn’t be seen. Still, Laila had arrived. They couldn’t refuse her entry. “Please wait. I’ll report it right away.”
The guard went inside and informed the butler. The butler told him not to make a fuss. Then he quietly

went to inform Samson.
When Samson heard the news, he frowned. “She brought him here?”
“Yes,” the butler said. “They’re at the gate. The guard said the child refuses to get out of the carriage, so Ms. Conlay is still outside.”
Samson was very displeased with Laila’s actions. He understood exactly what she was trying to do.
As long as the Kohlers acknowledged that the boy was the real Raymond, then he could live under Raymond’s identity and become the heir of the Silvermoon Pack
But Samson refused. No one in the Kohlers would accept someone who wasn’t Raymond pretending to be
him.
“Don’t alert the others. I’ll go see them myself.” Samson thought it was best to settle the matter right at the gate. There was no need to let Laila enter and no need to let the others know. If the news accidentally reached his mother, it could crush her.
She could no longer handle any more shocks.
He strode out with the butler. The carriage was parked outside the main gate. Laila was bent slightly, speaking to the person inside.
Samson cleared his throat and stopped a short distance away.
Laila turned around. She saw Samson standing behind her, his expression stern and cold. She called out, “Greetings.”
He gave a slight nod and glanced at the carriage. A small hand quickly pulled down the curtain, hiding the child’s face.
His gaze on Laila turned colder, and his eyes were like frost. “I know what you’re trying to do, but we won’t play along.
“If you’ve taken a liking to some child, just adopt him directly. Don’t find someone who looks like Raymond.
“There’s only one Raymond. No one can replace him!”
