The next morning, Laila sent someone to invite Victoria from Blackrock Pack.

The other party arrived quickly, coming together with her mother, Eleanor Langley, the current Luna of Blackrock Pack.

After meeting, both sides exchanged a few polite greetings.

Laila’s gaze settled on Victoria. She was dressed very simply, wearing a moon–gray wool dress with a fox fur cloak over it. A wolf fang brooch was pinned at the collar. She looked to be in her early twenties. Her face was beautiful, but her expression carried a dull, lifeless calm.

Eleanor clearly wanted to exchange a few more polite words, but Victoria had already lost her patience.

She spoke directly. “Laila, tell me something. Why did you dissolve your mate bond with Holt? Did he do something immoral? Is he unworthy of the title of Alpha?”

Eleanor’s expression darkened. “Victoria! That is rude.”

But Victoria stubbornly continued. “I know I am being abrupt, but I hope Laila will answer honestly.”

Laila did not mind. She replied directly,“Same reason as the rumors. He wanted to become mates with Maris, and I don’t do love triangles.”

Victoria clearly did not believe it. “Is that really the only reason?”

Laila replied, “Yes. Would you accept your fated mate telling you he had fallen in love with another she–wolf?”

Victoria answered without hesitation. “Of course not.” But she still refused to give up. “But I heard that he respected you very much. He was willing to let you become the primary Luna and even hand Ironclaw Pack over to you. Is that true?”

What Victoria said was true. But Ironclaw Pack had no money. All the money needed to manage it would have come from Laila.

Laila had no intention of telling her that, so she simply nodded in silence.

Laila did not like the hidden sting in her words either, so her tone cooled slightly. “Fate is not something people can control. When I left Holt, I never expected to marry Prince Vance.”

Eleanor quickly frowned and scolded sharply, “Victoria! Watch your mouth.”

Victoria lowered her eyes slightly, acknowledging her mother’s scolding. But when she looked up again, her tone was still blunt. “I spoke out of turn. That’s just how I talk. If I offended you, Ms. Conlay, please do not take it to heart.” She paused before asking again. “Then what kind of person is Holt? Since you separated from him, I assume you think he’s awful.”

Laila found it amusing. “Since you’ve already reached that conclusion, why ask me at all?

“If you really want to know what kind of person he is, you shouldn’t be asking me. Like you said, I dissolved the mate bond with him because I couldn’t endure it anymore. So how could he possibly be a good person in my eyes?”

Seeing the expressions of both Victoria and Eleanor shift at the same time, Laila picked up her cup and took a sip of water before continuing, “However, everything between him and me was a private grievance. From the moment the mate bond was dissolved, we became strangers, and those grievances disappeared as well. I actually do not know Holt very well. He left for the battlefield on our wedding night. When he returned, he planned to marry Maris, and afterward the mate bond was dissolved. In truth, even before the bond ended, we were practically strangers.”
