“Don’t do anything stupid. If you try to assassinate Damian, the entire Bloodmoon Pack will hunt you down, and King Vaughn will be furious.”
Laila turned her head to look at her. “Are you worried your family might agree to the marriage?”
Viola clasped both hands behind her head. “I don’t know. But Laila, you know how it is with my family. We’re good at business and we have money, but we don’t have power. My father is only a beta. If Damian manages to persuade his pack Alpha to pressure my father then maybe my father will have no choice but to agree.”
Viola’s father was just an ordinary beta from a mid–sized pack with no special backing. The only reason his family had money was because he was good at business. And in a pack, ordinary werewolves were expected to obey the Alpha’s orders. If they resisted, they could face severe consequences.
“But even if they all agreed, I know you wouldn’t,” Laila said.
“No, I wouldn’t.” Viola sounded deeply unhappy. “But it would make life very hard for my father and my whole family. The Alpha might even exile us.”
To be expelled from a pack and become rogues was a terrible thing. Viola was so worried she wanted nothing more than to rush home immediately.
“Do you want to go back?” Laila asked.
“I do, but I’m not going. I’ll send someone back to ask what’s happening.”
Laila gave a quiet hum and pulled the blanket over her head, tears already spilling over. She knew why Viola wasn’t leaving.
That night, Laila barely slept at all. She got up early the next morning. She cooked some oatmeal herself, mixed in a little goat’s milk, sweetened it lightly with honey, and carried it over to feed Elyse. Maybe because Laila was the one feeding her, Elyse managed to eat nearly half a bowl. Marigold said that already counted as eating a lot. Usually, Elyse could only manage a bite or two before she couldn’t keep going.
Then she sighed and said, “If only Ms. Harmon’s son and daughters would come see her, maybe she’d be happy enough that she might really get better.”
“Forget it. Out of those three, the ones who want to come can’t, and the ones who can come don’t want to,” Wren said with a frown.
Hearing that made Laila feel both miserable and furious. She wanted nothing more than to storm into Bloodmoon Pack and beat Damian senseless. Then demand to know why Elyse’s three children didn’t care about their own mother at all.
After eating a little, Elyse had no energy left and soon fell asleep again. Pearl, on the other hand, was recovering quickly after the poison was removed. Today she already seemed about half back to herself. Wren checked on her and said that in another two or three days, she’d be fully recovered. That let Laila relax a little.
But the moment she thought of Elyse’s condition, the irritation in her chest came rushing back. Still, she knew that for Elyse, dissolving the mate bond might actually have been a good thing. The she–wolves of the Conlay line could witness what their mates were doing through the mate mark, which meant that whenever Damian slept with other women, Elyse could feel it. Moon Goddess above, that was too cruel.

Laila didn’t want to think about it anymore, so she shifted into wolf form and ran out to clear her head. She kept running until she suddenly caught a familiar scent.
Samuel? How could that be?
Laila thought she must’ve lost her mind to imagine Samuel had followed her all the way to Moonlit Valley. That couldn’t possibly be true. After being told out of nowhere that the mating ceremony was canceled, he was probably furious. Maybe he wouldn’t even speak to her again after this.
Laila let out a soft sigh and turned to head back, only for the corner of her eye to catch sight of a majestic male wolf charging over the slope. His coat was the deep blue of the night sky at its darkest, and under the sunlight, every strand of fur gleamed with shattered light.
Laila froze in place. It really was Samuel.
