In truth, waiting for the reinforcements led by Holt had been the safest option, but everyone was beyond famished.

Supplies were running out faster than moonlight slipped away!

Before they tore into each other like starving wolves, they had to tear open the enemy’s city first.

But before the true plunder began, Laila still had one more task…

Only by completing this task could they effectively reduce the casualties among ordinary soldiers and raise the chances of a successful siege!

Samuel would personally lead this strike team of fangs. No one objected because in wolf law, the sharpest fang was always aime at the hardest shield.

At three in the morning, they gathered beneath the city walls, merging into a silent shadow.

Samuel’s gaze swept over every face like an icy blade, pausing on Laila for a brief moment before moving on.

“No matter who completes the task first, go down immediately and open the city gates.”

His voice was low, yet it seemed to tear through the cold wind. “The rest will use howls as the signal and provide full cover.”

“Yes, Your Highness!”

Samuel nodded.

In the instant before he leapt onto the wall, his gray eyes swept over Laila again, but this time, he didn’t look away until Laila lifted her chin and met his gaze in the way of a wolf warrior.

“Move out!”

The siege began!

Samuel surged onto the wall like a streak of silver lightning, his appearance instantly igniting enemy howls and a storm of arrows.

In that split second of chaos, Laila and the other Alpha wolves slipped into the shadows like phantoms.

After swiftly destroying the defensive ballistae and other equipment, Laila immediately jumped down to open the city gates.

As she leapt, she caught a glimpse out of the corner of her eye–Prince Samuel, surrounded by Alpha wolves, was still holding his ground.

His deep blue wolf fur bristled amid the slaughter, faint blue white arcs of lightning flowing beneath his pelt.

What was that?

Samuel stood on the small hill, not approaching any closer.

Once the battle had ended, he had already come to pay his respects.

He had chosen to bring Laila here because he saw in her the same near–stubborn resilience as General Conlay. Given time, this young she–wolf would never fall short of her father.

Once, he had believed she was destined for that path; the brightest Alpha wolf at Moonlight Academy, a future female general who would command armies.

Until she suddenly withdrew from the academy, swiftly formed a mate bond with Holt of Ironclaw Pack, and even announced to the outside world that she was merely a “docile Omega.”

He had thought she had chosen the den and cubs, rather than the battlefield and howls.

Yet she had appeared at Vagen…

Five days and five nights, crossing the territory of three hostile tribes, just to deliver intelligence that might have been dismissed as madness!

It was truly remarkable.

But strangely, during this reunion, he never once saw on her face that fiery, unrestrained smile she used to have at the academy.

In its place was a restraint that had been tempered by hardship, almost painful in its endurance.

The battle report from Vagen was relayed back to the Royal Court by three werewolf messengers, passing it hand to hand over the course of three days.

When the Alpha King saw Laila’s name in the report, he froze for a moment, then immediately sent people to investigate Silvermoon Pack’s den.

Only then did he learn that on the very night he had reprimanded her, Laila had quietly rushed to the Vagen battlefield to deliver the warning herself!

Facing the uneasy members of Silvermoon Pack, the Alpha King did not assign blame.

Instead, he was overjoyed.

“Good, good. As expected of General Conlay’s daughter!”

He immediately summoned the four Beta aides. As king, he had four Beta deputies who assisted in governing the Royal Court.

One of them, Mr. Merona, burst into tears upon hearing the news. “Irilla has been reclaimed. Laila’s contributions were paramount. She took the granaries and held them. We can reduce our supply lines now! Do you know how much grain and silver this saves us? General Conlay, do you see this? Your daughter is truly extraordinary, and she is worthy of the Conlay name!”

Another Beta, Drogo Kennedy, was so excited that goosebumps rose all over his body. “I never imagined that Laila was an Alpha wolf and was so fierce in battle! The Moon Goddess truly blesses our Rydar Kingdom!”

“Vagen is about to be reclaimed. And I have lived long enough to see Vagen return! I can now die with no regrets.”

“Indeed.”

Even the Alpha King could not hide his smile.

If he could achieve what his father had failed to accomplish during his reign, it would become his greatest political legacy.

In the annals of Rydar’s history, he would surely stand as one of its most brilliant Alpha Kings.

Yet the stronger his elation grew, the deeper his regret became. When Laila had come to the palace to report, he had spoken harshly and hurt her.

He had always felt indebted to the Conlays.

When Kain had fallen into danger on the battlefield, he had failed to dispatch reinforcements in time, resulting in the deaths of the father and sons.

He had thought that posthumously granting Kain the dukedom would make amends, but now Laila had earned fresh merit, continuing the Conlays‘ loyalty to the kingdom.

He sighed softly to himself. Granting Holt and Maris the mate bond back then had been a mistake.

He issued an order to Drogo. “Go at once and deliver the royal decree. Laila has earned military merit; Samuel promoted her on the battlefield to Lieutenant Colonel, and I have no objections. In addition, I will corner upon her the rank of Major General. Once Simonne is taken and Vagen is reclaimed, she will be promoted to Lieutenant General.”

Promises made to soldiers on the battlefield could not be false. All the Betas understood that the Conlays had a worthy successor. And Maris’s title of ‘general‘ was only honorary. Her actual rank was merely Colonel, two levels below Major General.

If Laila were to be promoted to Colonel, she would outrank Maris by three full ranks.

One wondered whether Holt, upon seeing his outstanding former Luna on the battlefield, would feel even a trace of regret.

Thinking of this, Drogo reminded him carefully, “Your Majesty, Holt and the others‘ reinforcements still haven’t arrived. The deadline promised by General Maris has already passed.”
