Shut up!Holt snapped, his pupils narrowing into slits. You’re just a captain. How dare talk to me like that? Don’t forget your place!

you

Viola’s eyes narrowed right away. My place? In front of an oathbreaker, any loyal wolf has the right to rip your face off.

Laila!Holt turned to me, furious. Control your men! Don’t let some mutt bark in my face-

He didn’t get to finish.

Manu moved first.

He didn’t shift into wolf form, but he lunged with the speed of a predator, swinging a fist straight at Holt’s face.

Stick flashed to Holt’s side at the same time, sweeping a kick at the back of his knees.

The beating that followed fell like hail.

Holt curled up and covered his head. He didn’t even get a chance to fight back.

His uniform ripped in the midst of the struggle, showing old scars underneath.

I’ve put up with you long enough!Manu panted, slamming a fist into his shoulder blade. A werewolf’s oath is written in blood! But you just threw yours away like trash—

And now you come begging?Stick kicked the back of his leg. Laila’s not going because of military orders, you blind idiot!

Every soldier in the area was watching.

Holt’s men tried to step in, but my soldiers silently blocked them.

Nobody said a word, but their glaresfilled with mockery and disgusthurt more than any punch.

I waited until Holt’s lip was bleeding before I finally spoke, That’s enough.

Manu and Stick stopped immediately and stepped behind me, their chests still heaving from

all the adrenaline.

Holt struggled to get up and wiped the blood from his face.

He looked at me with a mix of shame, panic, and a weird, blank kind of pain.

I walked over and crouched down so we could meet at eye level.

If you want to go, I won’t stop you. But my soldiers won’t move an inch. That is Prince Vance’s order, and it’s mine, too.

In the end, he took his thousand soldiers and disappeared into the wasteland again.

I watched them leave, my fingernails digging deep into my palms.

He’s going to die out there,Nita hissed in my head.

Maybe.I turned back toward camp. But that’s no longer on me.

The fire was still burning.

I added another piece of wood and watched the sparks fly up into the night sky.

Like blood, like eyes that would never come home.

Holt’s POV:

I led my soldiers searching through the northern ridges and empty valleys until late at night, but I still couldn’t catch even the faintest scent of Maris.

Under the moonlight, I whispered a prayer to the Moon Goddess, trying to feel that spark of our bond in my blood

But there was only the wind. Only the hollow howling across the wasteland.

Then we were attacked by a large group of Rogues. Their eyes burned with hungry madness.

After the fight, I lost dozens more of my men.

Was this punishment?

Was it because I broke my oath to Laila and ripped up the most sacred bond of our kind?

Sir!A scout whispered, running up to me. There are more Rogues in the valley aheadmore

than before.

I bared my fangs, but in the end, I forced out an order in my hoarse voice. Fall back to Laila’s

camp.

The trip back was long and quiet.

The sound of wolf paws crushing snow and dry branches echoed in my ears.

Laila’s words kept echoing in my head, There was something wrong with the Lovanfall treaty.

What kind of problem would make the Solantia Kingdom hunt Maris down like this?

It’s almost like their royal heir got torn apart or something,Victor muttered in my mind.

No way!I snapped, waving my hand in irritation. Maris couldn’t even get close to an Alpha of that level.

Before sunrise, we finally saw the campfire in Laila’s camp still burning.

I wanted to walk up to her and demand the truthshe might know more.

But the second she saw me, she looked away. Her face looked like cold stone in the firelight.

Viola, standing next to her, bared her fangs at me and let out a low warning growl.

I had no choice but to lead my soldiers to the edge of camp and sit down alone.

I forced down a few bites of cold, hard venison, but sleep wouldn’t come.

I tossed and turned until the sun started to rise. Suddenly, a massive wall of dark shadows appeared on the distant ridge.

Then the horn in the center of the camp shattered the quiet morning.

Soldiers sprang up, fur bristling in the morning light.

I looked up and saw glowing green eyes lighting up, one by one, on the slope across from us as the sky grew brighter.

The Solantian werewolves who took Maris were finally here!
