[Jake’s POV]
She moved like water over stone.
The sliding rice-paper doors whispered open and then were still. Two Imperial Guards stepped out first and took positions. Their faces were blank. Their hands rested near their sides.
Then she entered.
Midnight blue _qipao_. The silk caught the lantern light and threw it back in fragments. Silver lotus flowers were embroidered along the collar and down the sides. Each stitch looked impossibly fine. Her dark hair was pinned up with jade needles. They gleamed. The elegant curve of her neck was bare. Her lips were painted a deep, blood red. Her skin was pale. Porcelain.
She didn’t walk. She glided. No sound. The hem of her _qipao_ barely brushed the polished wood floor.
The air changed the moment she was in the room.
It got heavier. Denser. Not the raw pressure of violence. This was older. The weight of authority that had ruled for generations. It pressed down on the shoulders of everyone at the table.
I kept my breathing slow. Kept my face blank. Kept my hands clasped behind my back. Every instinct screamed to track exits, to measure distance, to prepare. I buried it. I was Noah Reed. Just a bodyguard.
She walked to the head of the table and took her seat on the throne carved from solid white jade. The jade was cold. You could see it. The room seemed to cool a degree.
"Raise your heads," Empress Song Mei spoke.
Her voice was soft. It didn’t need to be loud. It carried across the pavilion with perfect clarity anyway. It cut through the incense and the silence.
The four syndicate bosses lifted their heads. None of them met her eyes. Han stared at the table. Lin stared at his hands. Zhao stared at the floor.
"The Black Lotus is broken," the Empress stated. Her gaze swept over the table, slow. Assessing. "Wei’s incompetence has cost this syndicate millions in untraceable currency. His failure is a stain on the Four Dragons."
The word _stain_ hung in the air. No one breathed.
"Empress," Han began. His raspy voice trembled slightly. "We were just discussing the fallout. Li Bai has taken it upon herself to occupy the Black Lotus territory without the council’s consent. We believe she lacks the capital to hold it."
Song Mei turned her attention to Li.
Her eyes were ancient. Dark. They didn’t blink. They seemed to look past the tailored suit and the gold embroidery and straight into bone. Like she could see every decision Li had made in the last 48 hours.
"Is this true, Li Bai?" the Empress asked. "Have you claimed the Outer Harbour?"
"I have, Empress," Li answered. Her voice was remarkably steady. She gestured to the USB drive still sitting in the center of the table. "I have provided the council with my financial ledgers. The Golden Koi is solvent. The transition of power on the streets was handled quietly. The police have not intervened, and the vendors are secure."
Song Mei looked at the USB drive. She didn’t reach for it. She didn’t need to. She just stared at it for a long, agonizing moment. The lanterns flickered once.
Han and Zhao exchanged a quick, furious glance. But neither man spoke. No one argued with the Empress.
"Thank you, Empress," Li said. She bowed her head deeply. "The Golden Koi will not fail you."
"See that you don’t," Song Mei replied softly.
She stood. The silk of her _qipao_ whispered against the floor. She turned and walked back through the sliding rice-paper doors. The two Imperial Guards followed silently behind her.
The crushing pressure in the room vanished the moment the doors closed. Like someone had let air back in.
Han, Lin, and Zhao stood up. Their faces were tight with suppressed rage. They didn’t speak to Li. They just turned and walked out of the pavilion, heading for the mountain path.
Li remained seated for a moment. Her hands rested on her knees. I could see the faint tremor in her fingers. She had survived the audit. She had secured her empire.
I stepped forward and pulled her chair back slightly.
"It’s over," I murmured, keeping my voice low. "Let’s go home."
Li stood up, retrieved the USB drive from the table, and slipped it into her pocket. She didn’t look back at the jade throne. We walked out of the pavilion and began the long descent back to the checkpoint.
