Taya
"He did what?"
"He signed them, Taya" Rurik repeated. Your father fucking walked in, took the quill, and signed the parchment without a single word of protest."
The cabin went dead silent. The thudding of the drums outside felt far away.
My father had spent the last three months rallying the outer camps to reject this Valdris treaty. He hated King Aldric with a burning, violent passion. He told me to my face in the armory that he would rather see Fenris bleed out in the snow than see a southern bitch sit in the Luna chair. He was the anchor of the opposition. As long as Kael refused to sign, the union wasn't fully legitimate under the old laws.
"He didn't argue?" I whispered.
"Not a word," Rurik said.
I stood up from the table. The sudden movement made the firelight jump across the walls.
"That makes no sense," I said, my heart starting to race. "You can't intimidate my dad. You can't bribe him. He swore on my mother's grave he would stop this wedding."
"Well, he didn't," Rurik said. "He handed Fenris the final piece of the puzzle. The pack is completely united now. The ceremony tomorrow is locked."
I walked over to the hearth, staring into the orange embers. The heat washed over my face, warming the tight scar tissue.
My father was acting entirely out of character. He wasn't yelling at the servants. He wasn't visiting his daughter. He was sitting wrong. And he had just completely abandoned his entire political faction to hand Sera exactly what she wanted.
"She did something to him," I said, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
