My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian (Sera and Fenris) novel Chapter 131

Fenris

I shook my head, my eyes darting back to the pale skin of Sera's thighs, then back to my brother's scarred throat. "Every time I look at her, all I see is you. How I failed my role as your brotehr. I see the life you were supposed to have. I see the Alpha you were supposed to be."

Dimitri dashed forward. He grabbed the front of my shirt, my body jerked forward.

"Stop whining," Dimitri snapped, his face mere inches from mine. "You're the Alpha now. Act like it. You think I care? You think I'm standing around in the dirt of the afterlife pissed off because my little brother is fucking the bride I never met?"

I didn't answer. I just stared at the red gash across his neck.

"You've been dying to fuck her for weeks," Dimitri said. He let go of my shirt and stepped back, shaking his head in disgust. "Don't lie to me. I've been watching you."

"I haven't."

"Bullshit," Dimitri yelled, his voice vibrating with anger. "From the exact moment you found her half-frozen in that cabin! You smelled her. You wanted to rip her clothes off then. You want to slide into that wet cunt right now."

"She's yours," I repeated stubbornly. It was a pathetic, worn-out defense, but it was the only shield I had left against my own desires.

"I don't want her," Dimitri said, his voice suddenly dropping to a flat, deadpan tone. "I'm dead."

"I was the spare," I argued, my chest tight and burning. "You were the Alpha. You were the one supposed to lead this pack and marry the southern princess."

"Things change," Dimitri said. He started pacing back and forth in the snow beside the altar, restless and irritated. "I took a blade to the neck. You got the crown. You got the girl. Stop acting like a victim."

"I—” The word stopped. “I feel guilty," I finally said. The confession slipped out before I could stop it.

Dimitri stopped pacing immediately. He turned and looked me dead in the eyes. "For what? For wanting her? Or for being glad I'm dead so you could have her?"

I flinched. I took a heavy step back, my boots sliding slightly on the black ice.

"You aren't glad I'm dead," Dimitri said. His tone softened rapidly, dropping the Alpha aggression. It was the voice he used when we were kids, back when he was teaching me how to hold a hunting spear. "I know that, Fenris. You know that. But you want the girl. You want her more than you want to breathe. I can see it. The whole pack can see it."

"I do want her," I admitted.

"Then take her," Dimitri said simply.

"I can't."

Dimitri threw both his arms up in the air in violent frustration. "What use is she to me while I'm dead?"

The question hung in the freezing air, heavy and irrefutable. I stopped breathing. I stared at him, my mind racing, hitting a wall against the pure, practical truth of his words.

Dimitri breathed heavily, his chest rising and falling even though he didn't need oxygen. He pointed a finger directly at my face. "I am dead, Fenris. You are alive. Live your fucking life. Claim your mate. Let me rest."

And that was it. He left.
