Mina
"Nothing."
I looked at my reflection in the mirror. A single tear had run down my cheek, carving a path through the faint smudge of charcoal on my skin. I picked up a jar of powder and a puff. I began to dab at my face.
"You can't leave this room knowing you're pregnant," I said. I didn't look at her. I focused on the mirror. "We are certain now. If you walk out that door, any high-ranking wolf is going to pick up the scent of the fetus. Usually, that’s a thing of joy. People would greet you with congratulations."
I paused, the powder puff hovering near my eye. I shook my head slowly.
"Not for you," I said.
I turned my head to look at her. Sera was watching me, her breathing shallow.
"They will immediately believe you’ve been cheating on the Alpha," I continued. "And at that point, Fenris won't even be the one to make the decision. The council handles infidelity. The penalty for a cheating she-wolf is death. It is a permanent rule. And it is worse for a Luna. They believe every woman in the pack looks up to you for the standard of the bond."
I set the powder jar down.
"It is worse for you specifically, Sera. The council already hates you. They view you as a Southern puppet. They will use this as a legal opportunity to take you out of the chair."
Sera let out a shaky, pained sigh. "You are not helping, Mina."
I nodded. I finished with the powder and faced her fully. "I know. I'm sorry."
I walked toward my closet. I reached into the back, searching through the shelf where I kept another thing I’d hoarded from the South. My hand caught a small, leather-bound object. I pulled it out.
I walked back to Sera and tossed it. She caught it in the air.
"It is an oil-based scent blocker," I explained. "The ointment is Southern. You have to apply it to your pulse points and your stomach every four hours. It creates a seal. It will keep both your scent and the scent of the child from escaping."
Sera looked at the bottle, a small, relieved smile touching her lips.
