Fenris
"That was my thought."
We stood with it between us, the springs breathing their warm air up through the grass, the blue flowers holding still on their stems where there was no wind to move them.
"So," she said at last. "Does this mean we're going back to the field?"
I looked at the stone. At the flowers he'd planted growing up over the place where the rest of him lay. He had been a clean thing. He had no taste for blood, and he had a life down here in the dirt, things he loved and tended and gave his hours to, and that was the difference between us that had always been there and always would be.
I had never tended anything. I was made for one purpose and pointed at it from the time I could lift a sword, and the purpose was this pack and the man my father had been, and I had hated every hour I spent in that chamber listening to the chiefs run their mouths. I am not an Alpha the way my brother was an Alpha. He was the seat. I was the thing the seat kept behind it for when the talking stopped.
The talking had stopped.
For once Vane and the animal in me wanted the same thing.
"Yes," I said.
"I'll get the boys ready." She turned to go, took two steps up the grass, and stopped. She looked back over her shoulder. "While we're gone. Who holds the keep."
"The Luna." There was nothing to weigh. "Sera holds everything while we're away."
Yvara took that in. "I see." Something moved at the corner of her mouth and did not quite become anything. "She's competent. I'll give her that." She turned the rest of the way around to face me. "And you've come to trust her a great deal."
"The pack's in good hands with her. She'll have Bram at her side. Between the two of them the chiefs will keep their teeth behind their lips. She knows how to make a room sit down."
"That she does." A short exhale through the nose. "Makes sense."
She didn't leave. She stood there a moment longer, and I know the shape of Yvara well enough to know she was deciding whether to say the next thing, and Yvara always says the next thing.
"You need to do something about the child," she said. "Or go to her about it. One or the other, before we ride."
None of what she'd said was new to me.
