His eyes held a pleading look, his expression utterly forlorn. Even his shoulders seemed to slump.
He looked so pitiful that Chloe Reed couldn’t bear it.
She couldn’t help but grip her phone tighter.
"Chloe."
Seeing her expression, Nathaniel Monroe stepped forward. "Let me see her. Let me just know if she’s doing okay. I won’t go looking for her, not recklessly. I don’t have the power to bring her back yet. I know I’m not worthy right now... I just want to see her..."
Chloe Reed’s long lashes trembled. A look of conflicted sympathy and helplessness filled her clear eyes. In the end, she handed him the phone.
Nathaniel Monroe’s breath hitched. He cradled the phone, his gaze falling to the picture.
The moment he saw it was a selfie William Quinn had taken of the two of them, his eyes instantly flashed with anger and resentment!
He couldn’t help but think of their wedding day.
He had been so close. Just a little longer, and Iris Yates would have been his wife.
But she was stolen from him by that scoundrel.
Nathaniel Monroe was seething with hatred!
He took a deep breath and looked at Iris Yates again.
He studied her image intently, not missing a single detail. Only when he saw that she was unharmed, that her eyes were as clear and bright as ever, did he finally breathe a sigh of relief.
’Thank god.’
’She hasn’t been mistreated. She’s okay.’
Judith Pierce rushed to his side, her handbag slipping from her grasp and hitting the floor. Tears streamed down her face as she reached out to touch him, but her hands froze in mid-air, fingertips trembling violently.
"Walker, you... How did you get hurt so badly?" Judith Pierce asked, her voice choked with sobs.
Walker Grant’s tone, however, was placid. "I’m fine."
"How can you call this ’fine’?!" Judith Pierce grew hysterical. "You can’t see! What are you going to do? Will it only be a ’problem’ when you’re dead? Walker, are you trying to kill me with grief? I’ve already lost your older brother. I can’t lose you too!"
Judith Pierce finally broke down, throwing her arms around Walker Grant and sobbing inconsolably.
For years, she had done her utmost not to think about Julian Grant. She poured all her focus onto Walker Grant; as long as he was happy, he could do whatever he pleased.
Even though she hadn’t approved of him being with Chloe Reed at first, he loved her. And life is short—you never know if an accident or tomorrow will come first—so she didn’t stand in their way. After their wedding, she had even been reasonably polite to Chloe.
She had truly thought they could live a long, happy life together.
