“She claimed they came from an active investigation. Said the cops were watching Thayer because of his dealings with a drug

dealer.”

Lazaro rubbed the back of his neck. “I believe Chun Kit’s crew could’ve accessed those files but the timing is too convenient”

“My thoughts exactly. I name Thayer, and you find him in under two hours. Like he wanted to be found.”

“Like he was bait.” Lazaro said grimly.

I nodded. “And those pictures? Even if they’re real, they’re just too damn perfect.”

“You think someone paid him to come in and say all that?”

“I wouldn’t put it past them. He’s way too calm, way too ready to throw Ami under the bus.”

Lazaro’s brow furrowed. “Let’s get back to what we do know. You confirmed he worked for your mother?”

“Yeah. Sunniva verified it.”

“And Ami admitted to delivering packages to him.”

“She did. But she insists she never handed over anything sensitive and I believe her.”

“What if the folder in that photo was a one-time drop? Something her father orchestrated without her knowing?”

I clenched my jaw. “It doesn’t fit my mother’s style. She doesn’t use intermediaries. She handles things herself.”

“But if her father had ever worked with her, she’d know, right?”

I gave a bitter laugh. “She could tell us in a second. But…”

“But?”

“She’s conveniently in Paris. Supposedly to ‘recharge.’ She’ll be gone a week.”

“Of course she is,” Lazaro said dryly.

I narrowed my eyes. “Meanwhile, Zinnia’s got a treasure trove of images that could be turned into a media circus. And if she gets Thayer to talk to the press…”

“She will,” he said.

“We’ve got no paper trail, no solid testimony. It’s her word against a stack of photos.”

Lazaro tilted his head. “So it comes down to one question: Do you trust Ami?”

don’t think she had anything to do with this.”

“But you don’t know that.”

“And what about her father? Could he have made a deal with Thayer behind her back?”

I stood abruptly. “Shit.” I didn’t wait for Lazaro to respond I turned and stormed back down the corridor.

Ami looked up as I entered the office. “I made coffee,” she said nervously, nodding toward her cup and the machine in the corner.

I shut the door behind me and joined her on the couch. “I’m sorry,” I said softly. “I know how hard this must be. He’s lying. I’m

almost sure someone paid him to come in and recite that garbage.”

“He is lying,” she said with quiet conviction.

“But Zinnia won’t care. She’ll twist his words, use the photos to back his story. And right now, we don’t have proof to counter it.”

Her voice turned sharp. “You think I helped someone steal Zinnia’s medical records?”

I exhaled, heavy and slow. “It’s not what I think that matters. If this goes public”

“It does matter to me!” She stood, eyes blazing.

I gently took her wrists and eased her back down. “I know you wouldn’t do it. But words aren’t enough we need something solid. That’s why I have to ask: is it even remotely possible that, without realizing it, you helped your father deliver something else?”

“No. I kept his books too. If there were extra earnings, I’d have seen them. He wasn’t smart enough to hide anything from me.”

I hesitated. “That photo of you holding documents?”

She shook her head. “I don’t remember it. Just small deliveries, that’s all.”

“Could the image have been doctored?”

“I wondered that, but… every detail’s spot on. The yard, my braid, the shirt it’s all real. They’d need to know everything about me

fake that.”

The frustration in her voice was clear and justified. I pulled her into my arms without thinking, and some of the tension finally bl

from my body.

“We’ll figure this out,” I murmured. “Take a few days off. If Zinnia leaks the photos, you don’t need to be in the middle of it.”

She rested her head against my chest. “And what will you do?”
