Chapter 30 Straight Into Danger

Steven smiled, completely unbothered. “Relax. The Divine Barrier’s already up.”

“You got any more beast crystal on you? Give me few more.”

Peter’s eye twitched. “Are you eating the things? Tell me the truth. Are you selling them?”

Finished

Steven looked at him flatly. “Do I look like I’m that desperate for money? I’m actually doing research with

them.”

“I don’t have any. Now clear out!”

Peter blew out a slow ring of smoke.

“Cheapskate,” Steven muttered.

Peter rounded on him. “Five level one beast crystals are worth over two thousand dollars. And you’re calling me cheap? You’ve got some nerve.”

Steven gave a sheepish laugh and waved it off. “Forget it. I already used all of them up for research anyway.”

Peter exhaled through his nose. “I told you to leave. This isn’t a joke. You think lightning strikes twice the same way? Move.”

“Fine, fine. I’m going.”

But then Olivia’s voice crackled through Peter’s earpiece, sharp with urgency.

“Peter! Eight Bloodfang Rats broke through the barrier from the same opening as last time! Move!”

Peter’s expression snapped to something hard and immediate.

“What?”

“Which position?”

The sudden shift made Steven’s feet stop cold.

Olivia’s voice came back. “Same location as before. The exit point is identical.”

“Same location again?” The words left Peter’s mouth before he

could stop them.

Something clicked in Steven’s chest, and his face went white.

The same location as before.

More rats got out of the Barrier?

That was Bianca’s building.

Steven was already moving.

He didn’t wait for Peter to process anything.

He turned and ran toward Bianca’s apartment at full sprint.

Peter lurched into motion a half–second behind him.

“Kid! You absolute fool! Don’t! Stop!”

He poured on speed to chase Steven down, but Steven was faster than Peter had expected.

Peter was practically burning with frustration when Olivia’s voice came back through the earpiece.

“Peter, be careful! There’s a Bloodfang Rat King in that group!”

Every last trace of color left Peter’s face.

Alan’s voice followed immediately.

Finishen

“Peter, we’re pinned down here. We can’t pull away to back you up. You’re on your own. Watch yourself.”

“Understood.” Peter’s voice was controlled and flat.

“Olivia, send me the thermal feed. I need their positions now.

“Sending now.”

A holographic display bloomed in the air in front of him as he ran, rendering the heat signatures of the Bloodfang Rats in sharp, glowing detail.

He could see Steven sprinting ahead of him.

“You’re going to get yourself killed!” Peter shouted at his back. “Turn around right now!”

Steven didn’t even look over his shoulder.

His thoughts were running ahead of his legs.

Please let them be alright. Please let them be alright.

Bianca!

“Steven, please run. Just run!”

The Bloodfang Rat King swung its massive head around and fixed its gaze on Steven and Peter.

A single piercing shriek tore out of its throat.

It lunged directly at Bianca and Vanessa.

Steven and Peter moved at the same instant, the synchronized reflex of people who understood what it meant when something that size started moving.

Purple light erupted across Peter’s body as all three of his Divine Sigils blazed to life.

He crossed the distance in a blink, an origin crystal cannon already up and aimed.

Chapter 30 Straight Into Danger-

The shot fired with a sound like a thunderclap.

A blazing sphere of blue–white light hit the Bloodfang Rat King dead–on.

The detonation was enormous.

The Rat King screamed in agony and was hurled sideways into the nearest building, obliterating everything, in its path.

At the same moment, Steven’s boot connected with the skull of the second Bloodfang Rat, a level one.

Peter nearly had a cardiac event.

The kid’s completely out of his mind.

One swipe from a Bloodfang Rat’s claw can snap his leg like kindling.

But what he saw next made him forget the next thing he was going to shout.

Steven’s kick had sent the creature, which stood taller than he did, flying through the air like it weighed nothing.

Peter stared in disbelief.
