Chapter 69 The Emergency Call

Darlene filled in the gaps. “The academy gave them a villa. They were here checking it out, and I happened to run into them.”

Peter’s jaw dropped.

Steven couldn’t resist. “Jealous, Peter?”

Peter scoffed. “That villa wasn’t given to you. It was given to Bianca.”

“Hey! Don’t be bitter just because you can’t have it. Bianca and I are obviously together–do I even need to spell it out?”

Bianca ducked her head, blushing.

“Quit showing off. Sit down.”

Steven laughed and pulled Bianca down beside Peter.

The joking stopped.

“Feeling better?”

Peter nodded. “Getting there. Once this wound closes up all the way, I’ll be fine.”

Steven nodded.

Darlene brought out tea. Bianca was quietly studying the apartment, mentally comparing it to their villa.

Peter asked, “How’d you kill the Rat King that day? I swear something didn’t add up.”

Steven shook his head with a grin. “You’d already burned through your Three–Sigil power on it. The thing was on its last legs.”

“I just grabbed your spear and started stabbing. It died. You think I actually have the power to kill a Rat King?”

Peter squinted at him, clearly unconvinced. The Rat King hadn’t felt like it was on its last legs to him.

This kid obviously had secrets of his own.

“Now that you’ve got a Sigil too, what do you think–want to join Team Ashen?”

Steven went quiet for a beat.

“I mean, I could. It’s just… down the road, Bianca might need to move to a bigger city.”

Peter waved it off with a grin. “Don’t worry about that. If that day comes, you go. We won’t hold you back.”

Steven raised an eyebrow. “You can make that call?”

Peter laughed. “That came straight from the Captain.”

Steven nodded. “Then we’re good.”

“Excellent! I’ll let the Captain know right away–tell everyone the good news!”

Steven sighed. “I’m a B–rank. How is that good news? You’re really after Bianca, aren’t you?”

Bianca blinked.

Peter grinned without a shred of shame. “Hey, you said it, not me. But we do value you, too. I told you tha from the start, didn’t I?”

Steven nodded.

Peter was reaching for his StarComm to message the team when, suddenly, both his and Darlene’s devices started flashing red.

Darlene locked eyes with him.

A holographic display projected outward.

It was Olivia–their Surveillant.

“Peter, Darlene–military dispatch just came in. Beast swarm breaching into the city from underground on the north side. All squads, scramble immediately.”

Peter’s and Darlene’s expressions turned grim.

Steven felt a jolt himself. Another beast swarm? What was going on lately?

Darlene spoke quickly. “Olivia, Peter still can’t fight. His wound hasn’t fully healed.”

Peter cut in. “I’m fine! I can go!”

They stared at him.

“You have Divine Envoy–level combat ability?” Darlene was floored.

Steven nodded. “Peter can vouch for me, right?”

Peter hesitated.

“You do. But this is a real mission. People die. This isn’t a joke–you’re not going.”

Darlene agreed. “No way. You’re still a student. Stay put.”

Olivia chimed in. “Exactly. That’s not how this works.”

Steven wanted to go. He needed beast crystals, and participating in a mission–even as Rearguard–would

earn him a share of the rewards.

Peter tried again. “Captain Greenwood, let me go. I’m the only option. Darlene is a Healer–if she’s stuck on Rearguard, nobody can tend to the squad’s injuries. Pulling a Blooddrinker to cover her would cut our combat effectiveness. Let me do this.”

“Please!”

Darlene countered. “No! Don’t be reckless.”

But Alan’s gaze had settled on Steven.

Steven spoke up. “Captain Greenwood, I already agreed to join the team. A mission like this–bringing me along is perfectly reasonable, isn’t it? And I’m not as fragile as you think.”

Alan looked at him with grave intensity. “Do you understand how dangerous this is?”

Steven met his eyes without flinching. “Completely. And I believe I can handle it.”
