Chloe Sharp shook her head again and said dazedly, "I don’t know... Maybe... possibly... he should be upstairs..."
Hearing Chloe Sharp’s answer, Melody Summers hadn’t even spoken when Nina Summers, standing to the side, couldn’t help but snap, "What do you mean ’maybe, possibly, should be’? Do you really not know, or do you just not want to say?"
At this, Chloe Sharp cried even harder. Sniffling, she choked out, "I really don’t know! I don’t usually come here, and Autumn Sawyer is wary of me. He never tells me much..."
"I’ve already told you everything I know. Please, I’m begging you, let me go! They’re the ones who did all the bad things. I’m just a young girl, I’ve never hurt anyone!"
"I swear I’ll cut all ties with Autumn Sawyer and his people. I’ll turn over a new leaf and live a good life, I’m begging you..."
Before Chloe Sharp could finish, Melody Summers suddenly raised the iron pipe and brought it down hard on the back of her neck!
Chloe Sharp’s vision went black. The next moment, she crumpled to the ground, completely unconscious.
Seeing this, Nina Summers asked, a bit confused, "Are we just letting her go like that? That’s letting her off way too easy..."
Nina Summers recalled Chloe Sharp’s previous actions, remembering how skillfully she had taken photos and videos. She felt Chloe couldn’t be as innocent as she claimed. Even if she was just a girl and couldn’t have committed rape or murder, she had definitely been an accomplice to their evil deeds.
Melody Summers let out a cold laugh and said softly, "Don’t worry. Even if we let Chloe Sharp go, Autumn Sawyer won’t."
Autumn Sawyer hadn’t shown his face at all today, leaving her and Nina Summers for Chloe Sharp to handle. Now that they had escaped, if word about this place were to leak, how could Autumn Sawyer possibly let Chloe Sharp go? When that happened, there was sure to be a dog-eat-dog spectacle.
Melody Summers was sure that a man like Autumn Sawyer had methods far more brutal than her own. Better to let him deal with Chloe than to do it herself.
But...
Melody Summers was still worried. Her initial plan had been to call the police and wait for them to come to the rescue, just like she had at The Crestview Hotel.
But recalling Chloe Sharp’s words, and the look of absolute certainty on her face when she said calling the police was useless, Melody decided they couldn’t just wait. They had to get out of this place first.
So she said to Nina Summers, "Forget about Chloe Sharp for now. Our priority is to find a way out of here."
Melody then walked over to Joelle Lawson. She gave Joelle a cold look and, after a long hesitation, finally asked, "...What about you? Are you staying here, or are you coming with us?"
Just looking at Joelle Lawson now gave Melody Summers a headache. Every time she started to feel that Joelle was pitiable, Joelle would do something so baffling it made Melody want to kill her right then and there.
And yet, she couldn’t help but remember that Joelle Lawson had been born into a family that heavily favored sons over daughters, and she wasn’t even fourteen when Adam Lawson sold her to The Crestview Hotel.
For the sake of a full meal, she had come to see selling her body at The Crestview Hotel as a good life. She was truly vile, truly malicious, but that malice was intertwined with too many things a girl her age should never have had to endure.
Looking at Joelle Lawson’s seemingly deranged state, Melody Summers couldn’t quite put a finger on what she was feeling. She figured she should get Joelle out of there first. After all, Joelle had been locked up here for some time and knew the inner workings of the place. Handing her over to the police would mean one more witness.
In response to Melody Summers’s question, Joelle Lawson kept her eyes lowered, her expression unreadable.
After a long moment, she lifted her head to look at Melody Summers, her eyes red-rimmed, and gave a slight nod.
’Chloe Sharp and her cronies had pulled out all of her teeth. She’d been brutalized like this, yet she still didn’t want to leave and even tried to kill the person rescuing her...’
’Is she brain-damaged?!’
Joelle Lawson no longer had the strength to answer Nina Summers’s questions. She lay limply on the ground, feeling the pain from her head spread to every limb as her vision pulsed with darkness.
Thick, bright red blood streamed down from her forehead, veiling her eyes and flowing into her toothless mouth.
With her last ounce of strength, she murmured, "Why... Why... We’re both his daughters... Why did I have to be the illegitimate one..."
Melody Summers frowned at the sight of Joelle, her emotions growing even more tangled. She’d almost forgotten Adam Lawson even existed. Why did Joelle have to suffer so much over it?
Joelle Lawson’s pupils were already starting to dilate, but her eyes remained locked on Melody Summers as she whispered, her voice as thin as a thread, "Why... Why was I born the illegitimate one..."
Perhaps because she was about to die, moments from her past began to flash before Joelle Lawson’s eyes.
Joelle remembered being just old enough to form her first memories. The villagers would curse her mother, Noelle Quillan, calling her a shameless homewrecker. They called Joelle a fatherless bastard.
Later, as she grew up, she learned that her father, Adam Lawson, had a family—including another daughter. When the adults weren’t paying attention, she would sneak over to the neighborhood where he lived.
As a young girl, she would hide in the corners like a little mouse, spying on Melody Summers’s life.
