Melody Summers was startled by the wail, asking in confusion, "What’s going on outside? Did something happen...?"

She wanted to go out and see what was happening, but just as she reached the door, Joanne White swiftly pulled her back.

Joanne hastily swallowed a mouthful of chocolate and shook her head at Melody. "Melody, don’t go out. It’s not safe."

Melody peered through the peephole but couldn’t see anything. She turned back to Joanne and asked, "Have the fights and brawls been increasing again lately?"
