Chapter 103
He came closer. I could see him through the branches, sniffing, slightly perplexed. I had smeared mud on myself, dirt, flowers, whatever I got my hands on to hide my scent as I walked, but he’d still managed to pick up a lingering trace of it. Right now, he was wondering how it had suddenly vanished.
Just a little closer, my heart began thudding loudly in my chest. Just back up a few more steps. Just a few more Come on now.
He moved backwards, examining the grass for tracks. This was it. This was my moment. I braced myself and then leaped from the branch, arms spread out, holding my breath. I fell right on top of him as he tried to shift. As his head turned, I jabbed the pen into his eye, temporarily blinding him. He howled, bucking me off. Shit. He turned towards me as I slowly backed away.
I grabbed the branch I had dropped before climbing. I swung it madly, forcing him to say wary.
“Come on, you bastard,” I screamed, my voice filling the air, darkness creeping up on us, “Come on and fight you coward.”
He lunged, changing into his wolf form. I managed to hit him on the head, the branch shattering into two pieces. I flung them down, panting heavily. The pen was on the floor. He tackled me to the ground. My hand scrabbled for the pen. He bit my shoulder hard, causing me to scream in pain, my fingers closing on the ballpoint pen as I writhed and flailed.
He pulls back, swiping across my stomach. I can feel the blood dripping down my body as I tense. He’s eyeing me with malicious intent. I can barely move. I can barely breathe. I hold the pen, hiding it from view. I wait. He sees me weakened. He shifts and grunts.
“You blinded me, you bitch” he hissed, even though it was already beginning to heal.
It’s a promise, not a threat. I would rather die than let him take me, my innocence. I stare up at him, narrowing my eyes, knowing this is the moment.
Bingo. I slam the pen into his throat with what little strength I have left as his eyes open wide. I yank it out and slam it in again as he makes a strangled sound. He’d underestimated me. He’d seen only an anomaly, a weak girl who couldn’t defend himself. That was his downfall. He choked on his own blood, the light dying from his eyes. Even his wolf couldn’t save him now. He slumped; his body draped over me. I shoved him to the side, panting. He was dead. I’d been so fucking lucky it was laughable. I’d come out the other side. I’d survived, even with the odds stacked against me. I allowed myself to smile, feeling blood trickling on my body, my eyes beginning to flutter closed as I began to give in to the sheer exhaustion, my body unable to take anymore.
Darkness consumed me. My body gave out. The last thing I heard before I passed out was my name being roared out loud. Somebody had come for me, but was it too late?
“Raven!”
