Chapter 157
Whatever it was, it was important. I leaned closer, cupping her cheek, encouraging her to keep looking at me. There were no injuries on her body that I could discern, which confused me. If she wasn’t hurt, then why couldn’t she move, let alone speak properly?
“What is it?” I urged, watching her eyelids flutter rapidly as she lost the strength to keep going.
I opened my mouth, ready to call out for help, and then paused as my mind-link refused to work.
What the fuck? I couldn’t even hear my wolf. It was like there was some sort of invisible barrier or force field around us.
“The drink,” Aeress managed to utter before her eyes closed completely, and she fell unconscious.
She was out of it but still breathing, thankfully. I had to get help. I opened my mouth but only a rasp come out. Screaming was no longer an option.
Shit. My mind began to whirl as I straightened up, swaying slightly.
The drink? The one the omega had brought to us. I had never seen the omega before, but I had taken the drink without question, because I was unfamiliar with most of the omegas of my father’s pack. Fuck. How could I have been so stupid? So trusting?
If that were the case, then he wouldn’t realize anything was wrong until it was too late. We thought being at my father’s pack would be safe, that I would be well protected, but we’d underestimated our enemies. My one regret was that Aeress had become a casualty, caught in the middle of all this. She was my friend. I would die trying to protect her if it came to that. She didn’t deserve to be harmed because of me. I was the one they wanted. Not her.
Why oh why had I let my guard down so easily? I should have known something like this would happen. I had no doubts this had something to do with Marissa or, worse her despicable mother. I struggled against the affects, using my entire strength to remain conscious, but in the end, I was forced to surrender, the drug too strong for even me.
I shut my eyes, unable to fight the dizziness, tiredness overwhelming me. I was crashing. I could barely keep myself conscious. The door slowly opened with an ominous creak, my hearing picking up the sounds of several soft footsteps padding across the floor. There were no words spoken, no communication. Somebody grabbed me by the legs, slowly dragging me across the hard floor, my body limp, my mind surrendering to darkness as I became unconscious.
