Chapter 206
Damien’s POV

I strode into the packhouse, my eyes fixed straight ahead, my mate walking silently behind me, her head bowed low, her eyes fixated on the ground, her whole body trembling.
I had made no secret of how much I resented this mate bond, that I would have preferred anybody but her.
Maybe it was cruel, maybe it was overboard, but every time I looked at her, I saw the woman who had lied, who had manipulated, and who had even tried to kill my sister.
Could anybody blame me for feeling like she posed a threat, not only to me, my family, but also my pack?
Just because she claimed to have changed, just because she saved my sister’s life, didn’t mean I trusted her or believed her.
Leopards can’t change their spots.
I wasn’t going to let her walk freely in my pack; I wasn’t some naive fool just taken in by her beauty.
Raven might vouch for her, but she’d always been too softhearted for her own good.
I wasn’t so forgiving.
The door shut behind me. For a moment, there was nothing but silence as I steeled myself to turn around and face her. To ignore the mate bond and do what I felt was important and necessary, no matter how much it might hurt my wolf or me.
As an alpha, I didn’t have the luxury of blindly trusting her. My pack had to be my first concern.
“You’re making a mistake,” my wolf tried to warn me.
I’m doing what needs to be done. She might be our mate, but I don’t trust her.
I turned around and once again was taken aback by how beautiful she was. That long golden hair that cascaded down her back reminded me of honey, her big blue eyes like big crystal pools that I could easily become lost in. Her body, slender and alluring, and her skin so creamy that it instantly drew my eyes. I imagined for a moment what it might be like to touch her, to hold that slender body in my arms, to kiss those soft pink lips, and had to breathe deeply for a moment.
Thoughts like that could prove to be my downfall.
I couldn’t let her know how much she affected me. I refused to show weakness as far as she was concerned.
“Damien,” she whispered, her eyes wide and brimming with tears.
“Marissa,” I said darkly, “since we’re here, I should tell you the rules. I wouldn’t want you thinking that just because we’re mates it gives you any authority over a pack member.”
Her shoulders slumped.
Good. She was being reminded of her place here, and it wasn’t as my luna. I refused to let her abuse her position in my pack.
“Okay,” she said quietly.
She made no effort to plead with me.

Good. This made things easier.

“First,” I said harshly, “you’re not to tell anybody that we’re mates. As far as anybody’s concerned, I brought you back here as a personal favor for saving Raven’s life.”
She flinched.
“What else?” she licked her quivering lips, her eyes filled with hurt and resignation.
“You’ll be treated like any other pack member. You’ll work for your keep,” I growled, “and since you’re not a strong warrior, you’ll become an omega and serve others.”
“An omega?” she sounded pained.
I raised a brow.
“What, too good for you? I could find something else more demeaning if you prefer?”
She hastily shook her head, knowing I meant every word.
“Omegas here are treated well. Nobody looks down on them. They work hard and are given a fair wage. I expect you to learn quickly and to humble yourself. We treat omegas like family. They eat at the table when they want to, they get breaks, and they have freedom to roam amongst the pack house as they work. I don’t tolerate any pack member abusing them, so keep that in mind.” I said darkly.
She bit her lip and remained silent.
“You won’t be allowed to roam the grounds. I can’t afford for you to distract my warriors or cause trouble. As long as you’re in the pack house, I’ll be able to keep a close eye on you, and you won’t be able to get up to any tricks.”
“Is that what you think of me? That I’ll use the mate bond or abuse it?” her voice cracked, “the thought never crossed my mind. I know how much you hate me.”
