Chapter 126
“I’ll talk to Callum too,” Damon said, already turning his mind toward logistics, some of his earlier frantic distress settling into something more focused now that concrete action had presented itself. “Figure out what additional security modifications our quarters would need to properly accommodate him.”
We sat together for a while longer, the practical planning gradually easing some of the raw fear that had dominated the earlier hours, though underlying worry remained present regardless, both of us still waiting anxiously for his father to actually wake, for confirmation that he’d genuinely survived this latest, terrifying crisis intact.
Damon’s mother arrived a while later, having been notified once the initial emergency had passed, her face pale and tight with obvious fear as she rushed toward us.
“Is he-” She couldn’t quite finish the question, terror evident in every line of her exhausted expression.
“Stable,” Damon said quickly, standing to catch her before she could fully spiral into panic. “He’s stable, Mom. Recovering from surgery, but the surgeon confirmed he should survive.”
She let out a shaky breath, some of her visible panic easing slightly, though genuine distress remained present beneath the relief. “What happened? Callum’s message said something about an attack.”
Damon explained everything carefully, watching her absorb the difficult details-Genevieve’s violent break-in, the sedated guard, the additional cardiac damage his heart had now sustained. I watched her reaction closely, understanding the complicated weight of everything she was processing, especially given her own uncertain, still-developing relationship with him.
“I want to see him,” she said, once Damon had finished. “Please.”
“Of course,” Damon said, guiding her gently toward his room, and I followed with Willow, watching as she settled into the chair beside his bed, taking his hand with the same careful, tender attention I’d
witnessed during previous visits.
I mentioned my suggestion about bringing him home once she’d had a chance to properly process everything, and something complicated crossed her tired features-surprise, gratitude, and underneath it, genuine consideration.
“You’d be willing to do that,” she asked, looking at me directly. “After everything?”
“I think he needs it,” I said simply. “And honestly, I think having him closer might actually help all of us feel more secure, more able to properly monitor and protect everyone simultaneously rather than managing multiple separate locations.”
She nodded slowly, something grateful and emotional in her expression. “Thank you, Evelyn. I know this isn’t a simple or easy offer, given everything complicated in your own history with him.”
“None of this has been simple,” I said honestly. “But I think we’re all learning that protecting family sometimes means extending grace even when it’s genuinely complicated to do so.”
We waited together through the remaining hours until he finally began stirring, his eyes fluttering open

slowly, disoriented at first before gradually focusing on the faces gathered around his bed.
“Sarah,” he murmured, his voice thick and weak, finding my mother-in-law’s face first among us.
“I’m here,” she said softly, her hand tightening around his. “You’re safe now. The surgery went well.”
He processed that slowly, his gaze drifting toward Damon next, something relieved and grateful crossing his exhausted features. “Damon.”
“I’m here too,” Damon confirmed, moving closer. “You scared us badly, Dad. Again.”
He managed something that might have been a weak, pained laugh, before his gaze finally found mine, holding Willow securely against my shoulder.
“Evelyn,” he said, something soft and surprised in his weakened voice. “You came too.”
“Of course I did,” I said, moving closer with Willow. “We have something to discuss with you, once you’re feeling a bit stronger. About bringing you home with us, to recover somewhere we can actually monitor and protect you more directly.”
Something shifted in his tired expression at that, genuine surprise and gratitude both visible despite his obvious exhaustion. “You’d want that? After everything?”
