Chapter 143
Damon pov
My phone buzzed again, and I forced myself to actually look at it despite the dread already settling heavy in my
stomach.
*Meet me tonight. Bring Robert. Alone, or I disappear permanently and you’ll never stop wondering when I’ll strike again.*
I gritted my teeth, fury and cold, calculating fear both crashing through me simultaneously. This was exactly the kind of escalation I’d been dreading-no longer simply threatening from a distance, but demanding direct confrontation, and specifically demanding my father’s presence despite his obviously fragile, compromised health.
A location followed, somewhere remote along the eastern border, well beyond our usual patrol routes, isolated enough that whatever happened there would likely go unwitnessed unless we brought our own resources to bear
I let out a long, heavy sigh, already reaching for my phone to call Callum, understanding immediately I needed strategic input before making any decision about how to actually respond.
“What’s happened,” Callum asked, answering quickly, some instinct apparently already alerting him to urgency in my earlier message requesting he come over immediately.
“She wants to meet,” I said, my voice tight with barely controlled tension. “Tonight, at a location along the eastern border. She’s insisting I bring my father.”
There was a beat of stunned silence on the other end. “That’s almost certainly a trap, Damon. You understand that, don’t you?”
“Of course I understand that,” I said, frustration sharpening my voice. “But if I refuse, she’s threatening to simply disappear permanently, continuing this exhausting, dangerous cycle indefinitely, leaving my family under constant, unresolved threat forever.”
“And if you agree, you’re potentially walking directly into an ambush,” Callum countered. “Bringing your father, who’s already survived two cardiac events and one violent attack, directly into what’s almost certainly a deliberately dangerous situation.”
“I know,” I said, dragging a hand through my hair, exhaustion and fear both weighing heavy despite my attempt at maintaining controlled composure. “That’s exactly why I called you immediately. We need to figure out how to actually respond to this without simply walking blindly into whatever trap she’s constructed.”
“Come over,” I added. “We need to strategize properly, immediately, before I respond to her message at all.”
Callum agreed, and I ended the call, staring down at Genevieve’s message again, my mind racing through every possible angle, every potential strategy that might allow us to actually resolve this dangerous situation without genuinely endangering my father’s already fragile life.
Evelyn found me still standing in the kitchen, staring at my phone, and her expression tightened immediately with concern as she took in my obvious tension. “What happened?”
“Genevieve wants to meet,” I said, showing her the message. “Tonight, insisting I bring my father.”
Evelyn’s face paled as she read it, genuine alarm crossing her features. “Damon, that’s clearly dangerous. This has to be some kind of trap.”
“I know,” I said, frustration and fear both audible in my voice. “But I don’t know how to actually refuse without

risking her simply disappearing indefinitely, continuing this threat permanently unresolved.”
“You can’t seriously be considering actually bringing him,” Evelyn said, alarm sharpening her voice. “Given everything his heart’s already survived, walking directly into what’s almost certainly a dangerous confrontation could genuinely kill him.”
“I know that,” I said, my own voice tight with the same fear. “I’m not planning to simply comply with her demands without careful strategy first. Callum’s coming over now to help figure out how we actually respond
Callum arrived within twenty minutes, and we settled into the living room, working through every possible angle with focused, urgent attention.
“We need to consider the possibility of using this as an opportunity,” Callum said carefully, “rather than simply either refusing or blindly complying. If we can actually control the terms of this meeting, bring sufficient security, potentially even use it to finally locate and apprehend her, this might genuinely represent the resolution we’ve been searching for.”
