"Then acknowledge it now," she said gently. "With me, right here, without needing to immediately solve anything or move toward the next crisis. Just be here, exhausted and overwhelmed, and let me actually be present with you through that."
I pulled her closer again, grateful beyond words for her steady, patient understanding, and simply held her for a while, both of us existing in comfortable, quiet silence, the accumulated weight of everything gradually beginning to settle into something more manageable simply through her genuine, grounding presence.
"How are you doing," I asked eventually, understanding I'd been so consumed by everything else that I hadn't properly checked in with her own experience of these past several exhausting months. "Genuinely, Evelyn. With everything happening—Genevieve, your own pregnancy and recovery, now Ethan and Willow both needing your constant attention, alongside everything with my family."
She was quiet for a moment, considering the question seriously. "Tired," she admitted honestly. "Genuinely tired, in ways that go beyond simple physical exhaustion from caring for two young children. But also," she continued, something warm entering her voice despite the acknowledged exhaustion, "genuinely grateful, Damon. For this life we're building together, however chaotic and difficult it's proven throughout these past several months."
"Even with everything," I asked, genuine curiosity beneath the question. "The danger, the constant crisis, everything that's threatened to unravel what we're trying to build?"
"Even with everything," she confirmed softly. "Because underneath all of that danger and difficulty, there's genuine love, genuine healing, genuine family finally coming together despite everything trying to tear it apart. I wouldn't trade that, Damon, regardless of how exhausting the journey continues proving."
Something warm and grateful settled into my chest at her words, understanding the genuine depth of what she was expressing despite everything difficult we'd both survived throughout this transformative journey.
"I love you," I said quietly, pressing a gentle kiss against her temple. "More than I think I properly express, given how consumed I've been by everything else lately."
