"We'll provide whatever protection is genuinely necessary," I said firmly. "But Miriam, I need to understand—if we formally oppose him, refuse to hand you over, defend this territory against whatever force he's threatening to bring, this could genuinely escalate into significant, sustained conflict."
"I understand that," she said quietly. "I wouldn't ask you to risk your own pack's safety for us, if there was genuinely any other option. But Damian won't simply allow us to remain safely hidden indefinitely. He's already demonstrated he's willing to hunt us across considerable distance, to threaten violence against anyone offering us protection."
I nodded, understanding the genuine, difficult calculation we now faced—extend continued sanctuary and formal defense against a genuinely dangerous, unstable threat, or attempt some alternative resolution that might avoid direct conflict but leave Miriam's traumatized community genuinely vulnerable.
"I need to bring this information to our council immediately," I said. "Formal presentation of everything you've just shared, understanding this significantly changes the scope of what we're actually navigating."
She nodded, though genuine anxiety remained evident in her expression. "What happens if your council decides the risk is genuinely too significant? If they decide protecting us isn't worth the potential conflict with Damian's forces?"
I considered that question seriously, understanding the genuine weight of what she was actually asking. "I won't simply abandon you to face that kind of violence alone," I said firmly. "Whatever the council ultimately decides regarding formal, permanent sanctuary status, I'm not willing to hand you over to someone who's already demonstrated willingness to murder children."
Something grateful and deeply moved crossed her tired expression at that firm commitment. "Thank you, Alpha-elect. I don't think I properly expressed, until right now, how genuinely terrified I've been that we'd simply be turned away, forced to continue running with nowhere left that might actually offer genuine safety."
"You're not facing this alone anymore," I said, understanding the genuine significance of that promise given everything my own family had survived throughout the past several exhausting months. "Whatever comes next, we'll navigate it together."
I left her quarters a while later, my mind racing through everything I now understood, and made my way directly toward the council chambers, understanding this required immediate, formal presentation given the genuine severity and urgency of the threat we now faced.
