Damon pov
I found Miriam sitting up in her bed the following morning, still bearing the fading bruise along her temple from yesterday's confrontation, but alert and clearly recovering, and I felt a small measure of relief at her improved condition even before she opened her mouth.
"I want to help," she said, before I'd even fully settled into the chair beside her bed. "If Damian's forces attempt anything further, I need to actually contribute to our own defense, rather than simply sitting helplessly while others fight on our behalf."
I let out a long, tired sigh, understanding her fierce, protective instinct even as genuine exhaustion at repeating this same conversation weighed heavy on me. "Miriam, you nearly died yesterday. A serious concussion, direct combat against someone with considerably more training and experience—"
"I understand the risk," she said, her voice carrying stubborn, worried determination despite her obvious physical fragility. "But Damon, I can't simply continue existing as a passive burden while your people risk their lives protecting mine. I need to actually earn our place here, contribute genuinely rather than simply accepting charity."
I studied her expression, understanding the genuine complexity of what she was navigating—not simple recklessness, but a deep, fundamental need to feel like she wasn't merely dependent on others' goodwill, that she genuinely deserved whatever sanctuary we'd offered her community.
"I have news that might actually address that concern," I said, watching her expression shift immediately to cautious attention. "The council reviewed your formal case yesterday evening, following everything you shared with me, combined with the verified evidence of Damian's documented atrocities."
"And," she asked, worry visible beneath her attempted composure.
"They're arriving this afternoon to formally announce their decision," I said, allowing a small, genuine smile despite the exhaustion of the past several days. "You and your entire community are being integrated into this pack, Miriam. Permanent sanctuary status, full pack membership, not simply temporary refuge."
Her breath caught audibly, disbelief and overwhelming relief both crossing her weathered features simultaneously. "Truly? After everything—the danger we've brought to your territory, the conflict yesterday—they're still willing to actually accept us permanently?"
