"Are you thinking about something impure?" Ling Tian asked with a slight frown, hearing Lv Baicha’s cry.
"No, no, absolutely not," Lv Baicha said, shaking his head.
Ling Tian huffed angrily as he sized up Lv Baicha. He was a modest gentleman, cultured and polite. How could such a person harbor such unclean thoughts?
"I know what you’re thinking," Ling Tian huffed. "As a man, how can you entertain such thoughts? Don’t you find it repulsive?"
"Yes, yes, I do," Lv Baicha nodded. "I was wrong."
The garrison soldiers chimed in, defending Ling Tian. "Right, you should learn from our General. Our General has a clear conscience. If your state of mind were half as clear as his, you should be satisfied."
Lv Baicha nodded incessantly. "Yes, yes, yes."
Ling Tian’s face was a canvas of embarrassment and shame.
The reason he could guess what Lv Baicha was thinking was that he himself had entertained impure thoughts when Wu Tian mentioned they were fated to be together.
But now, with pressing matters at hand, he quickly grabbed Lv Baicha. As they walked, he said, "The Ancestor of Blood Refinement wants to see you."
"What? He wants to see me?" Lv Baicha shivered.
Having read a great many books, he knew what kind of existence a Blood Refiner was.
The Art of Blood Refinement had existed for thousands of years. During that time, countless ordinary people full of dreams delved into its study. Yet, with no hope of success, their numbers dwindled over the ages. As time went on, fewer people became Blood Refiners, and most lost all hope for the Path of Blood Refinement.
Who would have thought that at a time when Blood Refiners were so rare, someone had actually succeeded and become the Ancestor of Blood Refinement.
Such a person must have lived through countless years. He was a great predecessor, a Great Grandmaster. In Lv Baicha’s mind, such a person had to be at least as old as his grandfather.
Anyone else would have been overjoyed at the chance to meet the Ancestor of Blood Refinement.
But Lv Baicha was different.
Having been thoroughly educated in the books of sages, he viewed professions like Blood Refiners, Array Masters, and Alchemists as nothing more than unorthodox, marginal practices. He wanted no part in them.
"General, oh General, can’t you just pretend you never found me?" Lv Baicha pleaded with Ling Tian.
The thing he wanted to do most right now was go back to his books. He hoped to finally succeed in the imperial examinations this time and be listed among the great talents.
"I cannot. I want to take him as my master, and finding you was the first task he gave me after we met. How can I refuse? How can I possibly fail?" Ling Tian’s tone was stern as he adamantly refused.
And so, Ling Tian forcibly dragged Lv Baicha, whose heart still yearned for a career as a court official, into the quadrangle.
"The Ancestor is waiting for you in the main hall. Hurry along," said Bo Gu and Meng Tian, who were just stepping out.
"Yes," Ling Tian nodded eagerly and gleefully dragged Lv Baicha into the hall.
Why does the Ancestor of Blood Refinement want to see me? Is it because of my Great Venerable Pure Yang Physique? Does he want my blood?
Lv Baicha kept pondering the reason, and this was the only conclusion he could reach.
The Great Venerable Pure Yang Physique was the perfect constitution for cultivating the Martial Path. Yet, his parents disliked the Martial Path, and so did he.
In the Immortal Emperor Realm, physiques had evolved over tens of thousands of years.
Great Spiritual Physique, Great King Physique, Great Sovereign Physique, Great Grandmaster Physique, Great Venerable Physique, Great Saint Physique—all of these appeared at random.
If he only wants a bit of my blood, so be it. I’ll give him some, Lv Baicha thought, his eyes brightening.
I handled that so well. Shouldn’t the Ancestor of Blood Refinement give me some kind of reward? Perhaps grant me my full inheritance sooner? he mused.
