The second the doors pried open, Phoebe bolted.

She didn't even look back.

It was as if she were fleeing from a ravenous predator.

Jaxson stood his ground, calmly debriefing the maintenance crew and the building manager who had rushed to the scene.

All the while, his dark gaze tracked Phoebe until she jumped into a cab on the street.

He finally looked away.

The building manager was practically sweating bullets over the incident, looking ready to drop to his knees and beg for mercy.

"We run diagnostics on these cars every single day. This shouldn't have happened. Rest assured, Mr. Hayes, we will launch a full investigation immediately."

"See that you do. Quickly."

The newly appointed CEO didn't seem quite as volatile as the vicious office rumors suggested.

After finishing his frantic apologies, the manager stared awkwardly at Jaxson's mouth. "Mr. Hayes, did you... catch your lip on the elevator doors?"

Jaxson slowly touched his lips.

It was undoubtedly smeared with her lipstick.

"It's nothing."

"Right, right. Good."

A strange sensation lingered in his chest, an inexplicable emotion tugging at his restraint.

He knew this was wrong.

She was married with a child. Their history was exactly that—history.

But he couldn't stop himself.

Why should she get away so easily?

She was the one who had started this. She had walked away completely unscathed, taking everything she wanted and tossing him aside like garbage.

At the mall, Sebastian Judson spotted Phoebe from a distance and waved enthusiastically.

"Phoebe! Over here!"

As they approached, Phoebe nudged her daughter. "Say hello to Sebastian."
