“Once I’ll allow You were harmed in a place you should frafe, and I’ll accept the hit as punishraent A second would only be warranted if I hadn’t nearly killed the future king of Eredhal in your honor for the transgression.” Prince Sylvan growled

“Nearly” she asked with a quirk of her eyebrow “What would be cause for death at your hands, Maie Killer? Aside from being an innocent female mated to

Prince Sylvan lowered his head so they were at eye level, and he breathed in the same air she expelled “If I’d just stuck my head Between your legs and

Isla yanked her hand out of his grasp and scoffed. “I would have killed him myself before letting him get that far

“Perhaps if you were as violent with everyone else as you are with me…”.

“A strike across the face wasn’t enough for that scum. I stabbed him instead,” Isla told him, insulted

Sylvan’s eyebrow rose out of shock and, she thought, so did the corner of his mouth The expression was gone just as quickly. His face returned to stone as he took her by the upper arm and guided her out of the alcove. His pace was quick as he strode toward his rooms. He glared at the guards stationed at the doors probably knowing reprimanding them for allowing their future king into his rooms would fall on deaf ears. As they entered the halls of has apartments, she saw several servants running from his room with pitchers. They blushed and ducked their heads at the sight of the prince and his dig

When lole tried to disengage herself to go to her room, Sylvan’s grip tightened and turned her toward his own.

“I can go to my own prison cell, thank you,” Isla said, pulling against him again to no avail

“When Goes your wall have to do with anything?” Isla grumbled

Sylvan growled and stopped in the center of the room He hauled her against his chest, his black eyes swallowing everything My wall has everything to do

Sylvan’s grip tightened, and she gasped, the sound making his entire body lock with tension “Now get in the tub and don’t come out of it until you ve scrubbed your skin raw. Understood?”

Sylvan’s grip on her loosened a finger at a time. It took visible effort for him to rip his eyes away He ran the hand he’d used to haul her around through his dark hair as he stalked toward the desk he had stationed on the side of the room Isla looked down at the tub, steam curling upward from the water the servants had brought in.

Mag I do this here?” Isin asked. “Perhaps you could just stay away from me for a few days and allow the scent to dissipate naturally I kind of like the idea ni it repelling you.

The Mate Killer sat down in his chart with a sigh of frustration. His dark eyes flicked up and traveled over her ruined clothing. “Is the thought of a hot bath truly so unappealing?”

“In front of you?”

Sylvan got to his feet, and Isla took a step back. “Threadbare, Isla, Sylvan reminded her.

“At least turn around,” she ordered, swirling her finger for him to look away.

With a roll of his eyes, he sat again and started flicking through the pile of parchment stacked atop his desk, Isla let out a long breath. She started to undo the buttons at her back. When they were all done, she cast a quick glance his way to make sure he was still turned before she quickly shucked off the dress and stepped into the water. She sank down below the lip of the tub, obscuring her body. No sooner had she done that then his eyes slowly wandered back

toward her.

Isla glanced around. “There is no soap.”

Sylvan swallowed hard. He stood and took slow, measured steps toward her. He stopped at a table a few feet away, and without taking his eyes from her in the tub, he picked up a bar of soap. He then finished the excruciating walk toward her and held out the soap, his jaw ticking furiously as his black eyes roamed the still surface of the water. Isla snatched the soap from his hand, forcing his eyes up to her face once again. With agitated movements, Sylvan

returned to his desk across the room. She put the soap up to her nose, curious as to what scent the prince had chosen for her to smother herself in, only to

find there was no scent at all.

“This soap has no fragrance,” Isla noted aloud.

Sylvan sighed as he held up a piece of parchment to read. “Why would I want to cover your natural scent, Isla?”

Isla’s brows knit together, and she wondered, not for the first time, how he could scent her at all. Not even her own father could recognize her scent. She

started the task of scrubbing the essence of the future king from her body as she thought of the enigma seated a short distance away from her. What was it

about her that drew him in? Surely he could have his pick of any woman. The eight women across the castle competing for his love were proof of that. Why then pluck a woman who tried to kill him, who swore to only be a maid, who was wolfless, powerless, penniless… A cup appeared before her, making her go

cross-eyed. So lost in thought, she hadn’t heard the prince making her a cup of tea.

“My mother mindlinked me that Lilith wanted you to drink this,” Sylvan said, his voice low as if he’d been listening to her inner thoughts.

She gave a distracted nod and took the cup from his hands. He crossed his arms and continued to observe her. His nostrils flared, and his eyes remained

black.
