The second day at the amusement park went far more smoothly than the first.
Perhaps it was because Daphne had reverted to her usual style, opting for a simple T-shirt and jeans.
Or perhaps it was because they completely avoided The Abyssal Asylum.
Regardless, they tore through the rides with ease, thoroughly enjoying the sun-drenched afternoon.
Before long, the sky deepened into the bruised purple hues of dusk.
The weather had been entirely on their side, gracing them with perfectly clear skies all day.
This meant the group's highly anticipated sunset ride on the Ferris wheel and the evening fireworks show were practically guaranteed.
As the sun dipped toward the horizon, they first queued up for a whimsical spin on the carousel.
Then, timing it perfectly, they headed over to the towering Ferris wheel.
Instead of piling into one cabin, they split up into pairs.
It offered a much more intimate, date-like atmosphere.
As the night devoured the remaining daylight, the park erupted in a dazzling symphony of neon lights, transforming into a neon-soaked dreamscape.
Melanie and Preston, along with Daphne and Everett in their own car, marvelled at the breathtaking skyline unfolding outside the glass.
Gradually, their cabins crested the very top of the wheel's arc.
It was the exact moment the fireworks were scheduled to detonate.
Just as everyone leaned in with bated breath, an ominous, grinding clank shuddered through the massive structure. Every light on the Ferris wheel instantly died, the rotation grinding to a violent halt, leaving them suspended high in the deadened sky.
Shrill screams ripped through the night air from the surrounding cabins.
Melanie didn't panic, but Preston's large, warm hand immediately enveloped hers.
"Don't be scared. It's probably just a blown fuse."
Almost as if to mock him, a sudden, vicious gust of wind slammed into the wheel, setting the dangling cabins swaying wildly and eliciting a fresh chorus of terrified shrieks.
In the pitch-black space, Melanie felt a strong pair of arms wrap around her.
It was a gentle, protective embrace.
One she knew intimately well.
"Are you cold?"
Preston's deep, resonant voice rumbled against her in the dark.
"...I'm fine..."
Melanie murmured back softly.
