"Ethan, thank you for being there for the kids while I'm away, and please pass my thanks to the sitter, too."
A soft, affectionate light shone in Ethan's eyes. It wasn't overbearing, just a gentle gaze that perfectly respected her boundaries.
"No need to thank me. I've been busy with work anyway, so I haven't spent as much time with them as I'd like. The sitter deserves the credit. She's the one with them all day."
"When I get back, I'm taking you both out to dinner."
Ethan's face broke into a warm, easy smile, looking effortlessly handsome.
"Sounds good."
"Don't worry about the kids while you're on your business trip."
Right then, Ethan received an incoming call from Miles. Telling the kids to keep chatting with their mommy, he took his phone out to the balcony.
"Ethan," Miles started. "Mr. Pierce from Lyonne Global is visiting the country next week. Alastair asked me to introduce you. Get yourself prepared."
All the warmth drained from Ethan's face. "My secretary has already made the arrangements," he replied coldly.
Catching the icy tone, Miles paused. "Are you still holding a grudge against Alastair? It's been years. It's time to let it go."
"He didn't know about what happened to your mother. If he had known, he wouldn't have—"
Ethan cut him off sharply. "Wouldn't have what? Miles, if you don't know the whole story, don't try to play the mediator. I agreed to return to the country. I even went back to Sterling Group. As for my relationship with him, I don't need you meddling in it."
Miles furrowed his brows, acutely sensing the shift in the other man's demeanor since his return.
He had tried reaching out multiple times since Ethan came back, but he was always met with a barrage of excuses. And now, the distance between them felt like an insurmountable wall.
It baffled him completely. It wasn't as if Miles had personally wronged him.
Ending the call, Miles immediately dialed his mother, Judith.
"Mom, stay out of Ethan's business from now on."
Sensing the sharp edge in her son's voice, Judith quickly asked, "Miles, what happened? Why are you calling to say this out of the blue?"
