Chapter 20 The Sister
(Sonia)
Sitting on the edge of my plush sofa, I stare blankly at my phone.
The screen goes dark, but my mother’s weak voice still rings in my ears.
She refuses to come to Los Angeles.
She won’t even board a plane to check on her youngest daughter, who is supposedly pregnant and in deep distress.
A bitter, hollow laugh escapes my lips.
I’m not actually pregnant, of course.
Faking the pregnancy is just a necessary trick.
A carefully calculated move to force Chase into divorcing his wife and marrying me.
Still, my mother doesn’t know it’s a lie.
She truly believes I’m carrying a child, and she still chooses to stay away.
I know the reason.
It’s always about my sister.
Every time they looked at me, they saw their precious Nat.
Growing up in that massive mansion, all I wanted was for my family to really see me.
But every single time my mother or Nathanial turned my way, they were searching for the ghost of the girl my mother left behind in California.
The sister I never even met casts a heavy shadow over my entire life.
Thinking about her always fills me with fury.
My perfect, carefully planned life started falling apart the night we all had dinner at that restaurant.
As if Elias Warren wasn’t bad enough, Nathanial looked at Natasha across the table and casually mentioned how her smile reminds him of our sister.
That single, offhand remark sent me into an absolute panic frenzy.
If Natasha is truly my older sister, why didn’t Nathanial recognize her immediately?
The answer finally clicked into place after her collapse at the coffee shop.
The serious illness she mentioned to me at Chase’s office.
The heavy hormone treatments she takes must be the reason she looks so different.
I didn’t understand how completely the steroids altered her facial structure and her body.
That’s why Nathanial couldn’t recognize the sister he spent years obsessing over.
But what game is Natasha playing? Does she know who we are?

And then there’s Gloria.
Seeing that awful woman slither back into our lives makes my blood boil.
I thought I got rid of her already.
Sending her packing the first time was supposed to be the end of it, but now she seems to be acting as Natasha’s bodyguard.
It can’t be a simple coincidence.
They’re planning something and I won’t let them get away with it.
Securing Dr. Evans was my first real victory in this mess.
A very generous bribe bought his absolute loyalty and gave me full access to Natasha’s medical history.
Armed with those private details, I went straight to Chase’s office a few days ago.
Sitting across his desk, I casually asked him about Natasha’s past illnesses, wanting to see exactly what he knew.
Chase just frowned at me.
“Natasha’s never been seriously ill,” he said, sounding completely certain.
He obviously never knew a thing. He doesn’t even know his own wife.
The puzzle pieces suddenly aligned perfectly in my mind.
The woman I constantly dismissed as a desperate, boring gold-digger is actually my own flesh and blood.
She’s the sister my brother refuses to stop pining for.
Worse than that, she might have a past with Chase that even he doesn’t know about, because she doesn’t look the
same.
He always insisted there was nothing special between them before they got married.
He swore she was just his Chief Financial Officer.
I believed him completely. Now, I’m not so sure.
He wasn’t lying, he just doesn’t know the truth.
Standing alone in the quiet medical records room at the clinic today, I look down at the old file placed in my hands.
Dr. Evans pulled it from the archives for me.
There’s a faded photo clipped to the front page.
It shows a younger Natasha, taken long before the sickness and the heavy medication changed her appearance.
The girl in the photo looks eerily similar to me.
We share the same blue eyes and glossy blond hair.
The same delicate jawline, and the same bone structure.
But the woman currently lying in the hospital bed upstairs is unrecognizable.
Now I fully understand why my brother never figured it out. And why Chase may not know he’s met her before
They look like two completely different people.
Staring down at the young face in the photo, a much darker thought suddenly surfaces in my mind.
