Chapter 73 The Unraveling
(Sonia)
I find a quiet corner near the vending machines and call Dr. Evans before I’ve fully thought through what I’m going to say.
He answers on the seventh ring, which tells me he saw my name and considered not picking up.
Very rude.
“Lily Warren is in the NICU,” I say, without preamble.
“They’re blood typing everyone here because she has some rare genetic marker. Every single person upstairs is lining up to donate. My brother is one of them.”
I keep my voice low and controlled.
“I need you to fix this.”
A long silence.
“Miss Morton.”
His voice has the same quality it had in our last few interactions.
The sound of a man who’s walked very far down a road he doesn’t like and can no longer see the start of.
“I’m a gynecologist.”
“I know what you are.”
“Then you understand that a pediatric case at a hospital, under a different physician, is completely outside my reach. I don’t have access to that doctor’s files. I don’t have access to any files in that building.”
A pause.
“I can’t help you with this.”
“You helped me with the miscarriage.”
“You were my patient. In my clinic. Where I have authority and access.”
His voice tightens. “You are talking about a sick baby, Miss Morton. In a NICU. I won’t touch it. Please don’t ever contact me again.”
He hangs up.
I stand next to the vending machine and stare at the floor, desperately trying to come up with a plan.
The linoleum is pale green and someone has scuffed it badly near the left corner.
I focus on that for a few seconds because it’s better than focusing on the cold, spreading panic trying to work its way up from my stomach.
Think, Sonia.
Nathanial is currently upstairs rolling up his sleeve without the faintest idea what he might be setting in motion.
Nathanial, who spent months grieving a dead sister. thanial, who hired an investigator and found the death certificate
The one I arranged, the one I paid for, the one that cost me a considerable amount of money
If his blood comes back compatible with Lily’s marker, if it flags something on a report that lands on Dr. Patel’s desk, it’s going to raise questionis.
They’ll look more carefully at Natasha’s bloodwork, compare it to Nathanial’s Ask whether they’re related in any way.
Then someone suggests running a DNA test
And then it isn’t a medical question anymore
