Southpoint Manor was on the outskirts of the city.

Wren Whitaker arrived at dusk, a thin mist settling over the hills. A few ginkgo trees stood by the manor's entrance, their leaves mostly yellow, scattered sparsely across the steps by the wind.

The nurse waited at the front desk.

"Ms. Whitaker, Margaret woke up for a while this afternoon and took another nap. She heard you arrived, and her spirits have lifted."

Wren nodded. "How is she doing today?"

The nurse lowered her voice. "Better than the last few days, but the doctor said she shouldn't talk for too long."

"I know."

The corridor was very quiet.

The smell of disinfectant mixed with a faint hint of sandalwood, creating a sense of twilight peace.

Wren's footsteps faltered as she reached the door to the room.

She was actually a little afraid to see Margaret Langford.

Afraid of hearing her say, "Wren, just endure it a little longer."

She could reject Eleanor Langford, she could reject Quentin Whitaker, and she could reject Lawrence Langford.

But Margaret was different.

Six years ago, when Margaret was critically ill, Wren had worked overnight to contact her late mother's former team, helping the Langford family secure a transfer and a treatment plan. Back then, she wasn't Mrs. Langford yet; she was just a young woman fresh out of the lab, wholeheartedly believing that technology could save lives.

Later, when Margaret woke up, she held Wren's hand and said, "Wren, the Langford family will never mistreat you."

It was that exact sentence that pushed her into that marriage.

And it was that same sentence that made her feel she couldn't just walk away.

Wren pushed the door open and walked in.

Only a single small lamp illuminated the room.

Margaret leaned against the headboard, her hair completely white, clutching a string of prayer beads. She was much thinner than the last time Wren saw her, her cheeks hollowed out, but her eyes remained clear.

Seeing Wren, she slowly raised her hand.

"Wren."

Wren walked over, sat by the edge of the bed, and took her hand.
