It was already afternoon by the time Wren arrived at Langford Medical.
The sky was overcast, the glass curtain walls reflecting the pale gray clouds, making the entire building look like a towering slab of cold metal.
Lawrence had chosen the executive reception room on the top floor for their meeting.
That alone was a statement.
It wasn't a neutral location, nor a coffee shop she could easily walk out of; it was his territory.
Standing in the elevator, watching the numbers climb higher, Wren felt surprisingly little emotion.
She was becoming increasingly aware of one thing.
Discomfort did not equal fear.
The elevator doors opened, and Xavier was already waiting outside.
"Ms. Whitaker, Mr. Langford is inside."
His address was careful. He didn't call her 'Mrs. Langford'.
Wren gave him a brief nod. "Thank you."
She pushed the door open. Lawrence was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his back to her.
On the coffee table lay the itinerary for the foundation gala, the guest list, and a PR briefing regarding the delay The Ethics Board had slapped on the Stellaris project.
Wren walked in but didn't sit down.
"Go ahead."
Lawrence turned around.
He was dressed impeccably today in a dark gray suit, his tie knotted flawlessly. Yet, his gaze was glacial, as if the impatience he had been harboring for days had finally found its outlet.
"You're walking into the gala with me."
Wren's tone was flat. "I already told you I'd be there."
"Not just be there," Lawrence said, locking eyes with her. "You will attend as my wife, and you will arrive with me."
Wren finally met his gaze.
"Lawrence, are you incapable of understanding simple English?"
Lawrence's expression darkened.
