Sign the Papers Mr. Langford novel Chapter 159

At 6:40 PM on Wednesday, Leo Langford methodically wiped down his desk.

He dragged the rag incredibly slowly, sweeping it from left to right, and then deliberately back again. There was a dried patch of glue in the corner. He tried scratching at it with his fingernail, but when that failed, he dug through his drawer for an eraser.

Halfway through erasing it, rubber shavings completely coated the wood.

He grabbed the rag and started wiping the entire desk all over again.

Watching from the doorway, a maid finally couldn't help but offer, "Leo, let me handle that for you."

Leo shook his head. "No, thank you."

He carefully arranged a pair of scissors, a fresh bottle of glue, a stack of colored paper, and an old model exactly where he wanted them.

The Space Station Model was positioned dead center.

The solar panel was still crooked. He had tried to fix it himself the last time, but he hadn't done a great job, leaving a bit of the white cardboard core exposed at the edges. Leo gently touched the flawed edge, then carefully placed his school assignment card right next to it.

The task card for The Junior Astronaut Logbook read: Repair an old item with a parent, and record the process.

He had texted Lawrence yesterday.

[Dad, can we fix the model tomorrow night at 7:00?]

It took nearly two hours for Lawrence to respond.

[Yes.]

Leo had read that single word over and over again.

"Yes" was awfully short, but the more he looked at it, the happier he felt inside.

At 6:55, he climbed into his chair.

At 6:58, he hopped down again just to slightly loosen the cap on the glue bottle.

At 7:00, there was no sound of a car pulling into the driveway.

Leo stared at his phone.

He wanted to send another message, but he forced himself to hold back.

Wren had always told him that reminding someone once was enough.

At 7:15, Eleanor Langford walked past his room, heard rustling inside, and pushed the door open to take a look.

"Why haven't you come down for dinner?"

Leo stood up. "I'm waiting for Dad."

Eleanor frowned. "Waiting for him to do what?"

"To fix the model."

Catching sight of the messy pile of colored paper on the desk, Eleanor's expression cooled. "Your father has meetings today. Men are out in the world handling real business. How could he possibly have time to entertain you with this every night?"
