Quentin's face shifted dramatically.

"Leave Lawrence?"

Willow snapped her head up.

She clearly had no idea why Harrison would drop a bomb like that.

Wren remained anchored to the spot, her fingers curling tight.

Harrison realized his slip-up. He had inferred from Wren's recent coldness toward Lawrence that she was plotting an exit.

But since the words were already out, he didn't bother taking them back.

Quentin stared at Wren. "You're getting a divorce?"

A flash of shock crossed Lydia's face, instantly replaced by exaggerated concern.

"Wren, this isn't a game. If you get a divorce, what happens to the Whitaker family? What happens to Leo? And what about Willow's position at Langford Medical?"

Hearing that string of questions, Wren suddenly smiled.

Even now, their first reaction wasn't to ask what would happen to her.

It was what would happen to the Whitakers.

What would happen to Willow.

Any final, lingering hope she held for familial love permanently shattered.

"Yes."

Wren lifted her chin, her voice ringing out clear and steady.

"I'm getting a divorce."

Quentin was apoplectic. "I absolutely forbid it!"

"Your permission is irrelevant."

"Wren!" Quentin was shaking with fury. "Don't forget your last name is Whitaker. If you make an enemy out of the Langford family, I will not protect you!"

Wren stared right at him.

"When has the Whitaker family ever protected me?"

The words landed like a brutal slap to Quentin's face.

He stood paralyzed.

Wren grabbed her purse.

"Starting today, I am done yielding anything to Willow."

She leveled a look at her stepsister.

"If you want Lawrence, or the Langford family, take them."

Willow's gaze trembled.

Wren delivered her final warning. "But keep your hands off the Stellaris project."

Willow's expression crumpled entirely.

Wren didn't spare her another glance as she turned and headed for the door.

Harrison followed close behind.

As she reached the threshold, Quentin's enraged voice boomed out. "If you walk out that door today, don't you ever come back!"

Wren's footsteps faltered for a second.

She looked back at the house she had lived in for so many years.

A family portrait hung on the wall.

Quentin, Lydia, and Willow.

She wasn't in the picture.
