Harrison snapped the folder shut.

"Does she know about this?"

"She does."

"And she agreed?"

Arthur stared him down. "She's significantly more practical than you are."

Harrison fell silent.

Practical. Clear-headed.

It felt like that was the only word anyone used around him lately.

Wren was being practical by cutting Lawrence loose.

Clara was being practical by marrying for corporate leverage.

He was the only one playing the fool, lingering like a ghost around Wren, fully aware he was dragging out the inevitable.

Arthur's tone softened a fraction.

"Harrison, you can pity Wren all you want. But you aren't going to throw away your future playing second fiddle to someone else's broken marriage."

Harrison looked up.

The words were brutal.

But they were true.

He didn't speak for a long time.

Finally, he grabbed the folder.

"I'll meet her."

Arthur gave a curt nod of approval.

Harrison stood up and walked toward the door, stopping just before turning the handle.

"But the Langford charity project is dead in the water. I'm not approving it."

Arthur frowned.

Harrison glanced over his shoulder, his eyes dead serious.

"The Xander Fund will play politics, we'll merge, and we'll trade favors. But I refuse to use real patients as props to bankroll a mistress's vanity project."

A heavy silence fell over the office.

Harrison pushed the door open and walked out.

Standing in the hallway, he pulled out his phone.

There were no messages from Wren.

And he didn't send one.

He had promised her he wouldn't complicate her life right now.

If she was moving forward, he needed to carve out a path of his own.

Even if that path didn't end with her.

That afternoon, Julian took an international video call.

Wren had just walked out of the conference room and spotted him standing by the hallway window. A bright, cheerful voice echoed from his phone speaker.

"Julian, are you dating someone?"

Julian pinched the bridge of his nose. "Don't be ridiculous."

"Every time I call, you interrogate me about my meds, my checkups, and my homework," the girl giggled. "But today, you asked how my art exhibition went. You're in way too good a mood. Spill it."

Julian sighed in exasperation. "Daisy."

Daisy threw her hands up in defeat. "Fine, fine! My lips are sealed. Just don't forget to pick me up at the airport next month."

Wren paused in her tracks.

Daisy York.

She remembered Julian mentioning that his younger sister had undergone major heart surgery as a child.

Daisy's voice perked up again. "Oh, and I want a tour of your Stellaris project! You said the system is going to revolutionize post-op care, right? As a former VIP patient, can I get a backstage pass?"

Julian's voice was gentle. "We'll talk when you get back."

"Well, ask Wren for me!"

Wren froze.

Julian glanced over his shoulder and saw Wren standing there, his expression faltering for a split second.

Daisy, sharp as ever, instantly caught it. "Is she right there? Julian, your face totally gave it away!"

Julian abruptly disconnected the call.

Wren couldn't hold back a laugh.

"She's full of energy."
