“You already know about Ruben, so why are you still going through with this wedding?” Petra demanded.
Lucas hadn’t expected the news to travel so fast.
He set the plate of pasta down on the table carefully. “Keep your voice down. She’s still resting.”
Petra blinked, momentarily caught off guard. It hadn’t even been that long, and he was already this protective. “Her family’s assets have been frozen. How can you possibly still-”
How could he still want to marry her?
“This marriage was your idea,” Lucas said flatly.
“I-” Petra faltered.
When she first proposed the match, Calvin had been over the moon. She’d been drawn to the Murphys‘ social standing, while he valued Lynn’s character and the long history with Gordon.
Now that the Murphy family had imploded, Petra had only found out after the wedding.
Sandy glanced at Charles beside her. He gave a small shake of his head–he’d just learned about it too.
Lucas fixed his gaze on Petra. “I don’t care what’s happened to her family. She’s my wife, legally, fully. Even without the Murphys, she has me. So unless you’ve got something important to say, please don’t come here stirring up trouble.”
He was already wound tight over everything, and the last thing he needed was Petra making it worse.
“I just hope you’ve thought this through. Especially now that you two have-” Petra started.
“Now that we’ve what?” Lucas cut her off, his jaw tightening.
“Lucas.”
Everyone turned.
Lynn stood at the bottom of the stairs, phone in hand. The screen showed a news alert–Ruben’s face plastered across the headline.
Her eyes drifted to the pasta on the table.
“Is this your big victory?” Her voice cracked.
Ruben hadn’t shown up today. Anthony hadn’t either. Now she understood why.
Lucas‘ expression shifted, his gaze softening as it landed on her. “Lynn, go back upstairs. I’ll explain everything later.”
She gave a hollow laugh, eyes locking onto Petra. “My family falls, and suddenly I’m worthless to you. Just 3

something to toss aside, right?”
Petra opened her mouth, but nothing came out.

Robert stepped in. Lynn, you’re part of this family now. Whatever’s going on with the Murphys, that’s not on you. You stay here. The Moores will always have your back.
Petra shot him a glare. He ignored her.
“I don’t need that, Lynn said, turning to Lucas. “You played this perfectly, didn’t you? You get the credit. you get the girl. What’s next?”
“Everyone out, Lucas ordered. “We’re done here. He started toward Lynn.
Petra’s voice rang out. “Done? You’re still choosing her?”
Lynn stared at her, stunned by the sudden shift.
She glanced at Sandy, then back at Petra. Something clicked. That herb in Sandy’s medicine–the one that prevents pregnancy. That was you, wasn’t it?”
The room went still.
Petra flinched.
“So it was. Lynn said quietly.
“What are you talking about? What pregnancy herb?” Petra’s voice pitched higher.
Charles looked lost. “What’s she talking about?”
Robert frowned. “Lynn, what do you mean?”
Sandy turned slowly, her gaze sharp on Petra. “You put something in my medicine?”
Lynn let out a cold laugh. “Quite the mother–in–law you’ve got. And none of you ever noticed.”
Lucas stood frozen, disbelief written across his face.
Lynn looked at him. “The medicine Sandy’s been drinking–there was an herb in it. A contraceptive. She’s been on it for years. And not one of you asked why she never got pregnant?”
It all made sense now. Petra had never wanted Sandy. Just like she didn’t want Lynn now.
When a family loses its status, some people show their true colors fast.
“Mom?” Charles stared at her, waiting.
Petra straightened, dropping any pretense of grace. “Fine. It was me.”
Sandy’s legs gave out. Charles caught her before she hit the floor, his eyes blazing as he looked at his

mother. “How could you do this?”
Robert grabbed Petra’s arm. “This is too far.”
Petra yanked free. “Too far? I was thinking of this family. Someone had to.”

Her poise crumbled into something raw and defensive. “You want to talk about Sandy? She drugged Lucas to get him into bed–and ended up with Charles instead. God knows how many men she’s been with. Someone like that thinks she deserves to be a Moore? Please.”
“Petra. That’s enough.” Robert’s voice was low, his hands clenched into fists.
The rumors had always been there, but no one in the family had ever dared speak them aloud.
Sandy gripped Charles‘ arm, tears streaming.
All those years of trying. All those years of wondering why she couldn’t get pregnant. And it was her mother–in–law–the woman who’d acted like a sister to her–who’d made sure of it.
Charles didn’t say another word. He lifted Sandy into his arms and walked out.
“Charles!” Petra called after him.
He didn’t look back.
