We had to face this sooner or later. But I really didn’t want to do this tonight.

“Is this what you want, Laila? To stay here and be a ruler?” I asked.

She worried her bottom lip with her teeth as her gaze dropped. “Admittedly, I hadn’t wanted this before, but… I don’t know. Already I’ve seen the good I can do. I can truly help people, more than I ever could when I had taken over Vanessa’s business. My life could have real meaning here. But…”

She lifted her gaze back up to mine, and we just looked at each other silently for a moment.

“But?” I gently prompted.

“What’s going to happen to us?” she said. “That’s what you are thinking too, isn’t it?”

I didn’t want to lie to her so I said nothing at all.

“Maybe…” She looked down again. “Would you stay? Just for a little while longer. Until we can decide what to do.”

I’d never be able to deny her that, not when I also wanted so badly to be near her as long as I could.

Slowly, I lifted a hand and placing it to her cheek, coaxed her attention back to me.

“Okay,” I said, and kissed her.

She made a whimpering sound, her arms coming around my neck.

The kiss deepened, both of us opening up to it at the same time. She clawed at my shoulders almost as desperately as I held her around the waist.

I held on tight, but she held on just as tightly. Tears welled in her eyes. They could have formed from overstimulation or pleasure -pain, but in this moment, I knew in my soul, they were from the bittersweet feelings of this moment.

This – whatever we were – was too quickly coming to an end.

We were on a train with the tracks disappearing over a cliff.

And there was no way to stop it.

I plunged into her again and again. She gasped, she moaned, I grunted, she screamed.

She clenched around me, and chased her over the edge of oblivion, the pleasure shooting out from me.

We held hands, even after I collapsed on top of her. Even after I listened to her heard and the sound of her heavy breathing. Even after those tears in her eyes fell down her cheeks and neither of us acknowledged them.
