Laila’s POV

When Ava came to the Lycan pack, she wasn’t alone. Though I had been expecting William, my heart was bursting with joy and relief to also see Riley and Hannah, who had made the trip with them. I hugged them all, before going with Ava to the hospital, promising to reconnect with the others later.

I had refused to take the cure before Ava, so I was still feeling the effects of the poison. This wasn’t anything different than I was already used to, though. I wondered what it would be like for the block in my mind, on my wolf, to finally be gone.

Ava had been happy to see me, but I could tell something was wrong from how reserved she was being. While the healer was preparing the cure, I said, “This will make you feel better, Ava.”

“I’ll still miss Daddy,” she said.

Something inside of me splintered. She wasn’t wrong, and as far as I knew there was no cure for a heartsick little girl missing her father.

“He had to go home,” I said. “He… He has a lot of things to do on his own.”

“I know. He told me.”

William had already mentioned to me that Jason had visited the hospital after leaving the Lycan pack, but he’d been somewhat lacking on the details. I could see just how much of an effect it had on Ava, though I imagined it would be worse if Jason hadn’t stopped to say goodbye to her at all.

He might have vanished out of my life without a word, but I was glad he didn’t do so to our daughter.

“He loves you,” I said.

“I know,” Ava replied, and the words seemed genuine. I wished could make the pain of the separation easier for her.

And for myself.

“We’re ready now,” the healer said, with the needle ready.

“I’d be happy for it!” I told her at once. “I always thought you two were a good match.”

She smiled at me. “Thank you”

Riley waved all that way. “What we should be figuring out right now is if you can shift.”

I had only shifted in the past during moments of extreine necessity. It made me nervous to try to do so now, even though my wolf perked at the idea. “I’d rather wait,” I said.

“Until when?” Riley asked.

Until I felt safe, was the answer, but I didn’t want to say that with my friends here. I should feel safe with them. I loved them all very much. But… I hadn’t really felt entirely safe since Jason left.

He had been my anchor and my shield. Without him, though I was doing well enough, I felt untethered. Lost.
