Chapter 573: Deep Shit, Said The King

DARKHOWLER — GARRETT’S STUDY

Garrett poured two whiskeys. It was mid-day. Neither of them commented on the time because the time was irrelevant when the conversation was this loaded.

Fin had given him the broad strokes. The volcano. The ancestors. The sacred fire. Three matebonds. The reincarnation roster. The green magic. The Gamma who was apparently a Fae prince, an Alpha, and the original Dragon King wearing a wolf suit. All of it delivered in the clipped, controlled cadence of a man debriefing a fellow king while his jaw did things that jaws do when the debriefing is also a confession.

Garrett sat across from him, one ankle crossed over his knee, whiskey in hand, wearing the expression of a man who had just received enough information to restructure his entire understanding of divine politics and was choosing to process it one sip at a time.

"That is some deep shit right there," Garrett said, taking a slow pull from his glass. The words came out with the measured weight of a man who respected the gravity of what he’d been told and was choosing understatement because overstatement would insult the man across from him.

He set his glass down.

"The fact that Alpha Frostborne isn’t, or I guess wasn’t, her biological father is what I keep coming back to. That must have been a shock to her. She was very close to her father, almost closer to him than her mother. The Alpha named her his heir and she was shadowing him by the age of ten instead of tutoring." He paused. "I almost wonder if the ancestors were wrong. Especially considering she was our—"

The sentence stopped.

Clean. Mid-word. The kind of stop that came from the throat closing around a syllable that a blood oath had decided was classified, the body overriding the brain with the ruthless efficiency of ancient magic that did not give a fuck about conversational flow.

Garrett cleared his throat. Took another sip. Moved on.

Fin didn’t press. He had suspected for months that Frostborne had its own equivalent of the Brotherhood of the Hidden Flame, a blood-oath bound inner circle whose members could choke on their own tongues before speaking its secrets aloud. The fragments had been accumulating.

What landed harder was the rest of it. The king of Aevamorra Vyracarum in the Crythian Expanse had mentioned the heir part during their audience. Fin remembered that.

But Fin didn’t know she was shadowing her father by age ten. Or that she was closer to him than her mother. The picture was still incomplete but the shape was clear enough now to respect the silence around it.

Fin turned those facts over in his chest and felt the sting of them, because he hadn’t known. He should have. He was her mate. He had asked her about her past, but the asking had been careful and the careful had been insufficient, and the insufficient was producing a guilt that sat beside his anger like a second passenger he hadn’t invited.

Of course she was close to her father. Of course the man who named her his heir and trained her from childhood was the center of her world. The adopted part changed the biology. It changed nothing else. Haldor Frostborne had chosen that girl the way Garrett had chosen Andrew, with intention and permanence and the specific love that came from picking a child rather than producing one.
