The Cold Surgeon's Contract Bride novel Chapter 170

The man just looked at me with cold, unreadable eyes. He didn't say a word.

That silence was all the answer I needed.

This was the man I had loved fiercely for eight long years. And today, when it came down to life or death, he chose to use me as a human shield.

What an absolute joke.

I took a step back, looking at the three people sitting before me: Mr. Sterling, Vivian, and Ferris. A crushing realization hit me—I had been so indescribably stupid.

For three years, I had poured my heart and soul into trying to be a part of this family. I never realized that from day one, they had never once seen me as human.

A broken, bitter smile touched my lips. "I don't think that's appropriate, Ferris. Forcing the woman you're about to divorce to be your scapegoat? That's a bit pathetic, don't you think?"

The word 'divorce' hit the room like a bomb. Everyone froze.

Ferris completely lost his cool. "Selena, are you out of your damn mind?" he barked, cutting me off.

"Am I?" I stared at Ferris, then glanced at his parents. I felt terrifyingly calm. "I just wanted to make one thing crystal clear to everyone here. I’m worried about Ferris's situation, I really am. But as his soon-to-be ex-wife, I'm not some saint. I won't take the fall for a crime I didn't commit. You'll have to find another way out of this mess. If you'll excuse me."

With that, I spun on my heel and walked out.

Just as I crossed the threshold, Vivian's furious shrieks echoed behind me. "Unbelievable! Absolutely unbelievable! She leeches off the Sterling wealth, and now that her wings are fully grown, she thinks she can defy us!"

Stepping out of the estate, I realized the weather had turned. The gloomy sky had broken into a miserable, freezing drizzle. The icy winter wind bit at my neck, sending a violent shiver down my spine.

And of course, I couldn't hail a cab to save my life.

Right then, my phone rang in my purse. I pulled it out to see Dr. Logan’s name on the screen.

A wave of dread washed over me. I took a deep breath and answered the call.
