Overnight, a bitter cold front swept through Port Capital, plunging the temperature to twelve degrees Fahrenheit. By the time I arrived at Capital General wrapped in a heavy parka, the sky was a gloomy gray, and a freezing drizzle had begun to fall.

It was bone-chilling.

When I walked into the department, I overheard Amber and some of the others debating where to grab hotpot. The moment they saw me, they immediately invited me along.

"I heard Dr. Hayes received high praise from the Dean yesterday! We have to treat you to a massive feast."

I hadn't expected the news to spread so fast. Glancing at the bulletin board, I noticed that the disciplinary notice posted yesterday had vanished.

"You guys should have seen it. When Dean Davidson praised Selena, it made the entire Department of Anesthesiology look phenomenal," Amber beamed with pride. "Dr. Arthur York and Dr. Evelyn Yates were there, too."

I was just about to reply when the Head Nurse's sharp voice cut through the chatter. "Is all your work finished? You have time to gossip bright and early in the morning?"

The Head Nurse commanded serious respect in the department. At her singular remark, everyone scattered.

For some reason, I caught a flicker of heavy tension on her face.

"In this kind of weather, water freezes the moment it drops," the Head Nurse murmured, staring out at the foggy window with a flash of anxiety in her eyes. "It's usually the busiest time for the hospital."

I looked at her in confusion. "Busiest?"

"Accident rates spike around this time every year compared to other seasons," she said, giving me a stern look. "Weather-induced tragedies."

I was struck by her acute clinical intuition and immediately went on high alert.

I had no idea that a mere fifteen minutes later, we would be put to the ultimate test.

"Get down to the ER entrance immediately! We have seven or eight crash victims arriving now."

Our team rushed downstairs en masse. Looking out into the hazy rain, I saw blood-soaked victims being unloaded from stretchers one after another, their bodies mangled.
