"It's really no trouble, Dr. Hayes. You're my idol, and my friend. I..."
"There you are, Selena," the Head Nurse suddenly walked in. She looked at me, then at Zoey, and asked, "What happened? How did you end up looking like this?"
Zoey immediately chimed in, "Dr. Hayes got egged outside the operating room and is trying to figure out where to stay. I offered her my place, but she turned me down."
"The situation is definitely a nightmare right now," the Head Nurse said, stepping right up to me. She grabbed some paper towels and began drying my hair, speaking as she worked. "But don't worry, I'll figure something out for you."
The Head Nurse explained that leaving the hospital right now was actually for the best. With reporters and furious victims' families surrounding Capital General, things could spiral out of control fast, and I was the prime target. It was better to lay low.
She also mentioned that Lawrence Logan was furious. He had marched right up to Dr. Evelyn Yates to argue and furiously distance himself from me, terrified the reporters would drag him down, too.
Right now, I was a ticking time bomb inside the hospital.
Taking the Head Nurse's advice, I changed into civilian clothes and snuck out of the hospital through a hidden exit in the underground garage. We hailed a cab and headed to Azure Lake Apartments, about four or five stops away from Capital General.
Thirty-second floor, one bedroom, one living room. The decor wasn't luxurious by any means, but it was exceptionally clean and cozy at first glance.
"You really live up to your title, Head Nurse. This place is impeccably organized."
"It's a subsidized apartment provided by the hospital," the Head Nurse explained immediately. "The square footage isn't huge, but the layout is great. Besides, this isn't my place."
She raised an eyebrow at me, her expression unreadable.
I looked at her in confusion. "Then whose apartment is it?"
"It's Leon's, though the kid specifically told me not to tell you." The Head Nurse didn't hold back. "When you mentioned renting a place last time, he had someone come clean it. I didn't expect it to actually come in handy so soon."
No wonder the place was spotless. Leon had hired someone specifically to prep it.
"Just make yourself at home, Selena. It has a triple-lock security door. Once you bolt it from the inside, even Leon himself couldn't get in without your permission."
The Head Nurse was incredibly thorough, anticipating even my concerns about safety.
Because the hospital was slammed, she had to rush back after ten minutes. I stood alone in the quiet, empty apartment, feeling a bizarre mix of anxiety and profound relief.
I was terrified about the escalating fallout from saving the truck driver, yet deeply anchored by the sheer sense of security this little apartment offered.
