Elaine retorted with absolute righteous indignation. "If I didn't see you as my child, I wouldn't have come today! You finally married into money, and now you're insisting on ruining your own life. I'm your mother; it's my job to stop you. I'm not going to sit back and watch you destroy a perfectly good life!"
George chimed in. "We are older and wiser. We've experienced more than you can imagine. Marriage is about compromise. Threatening divorce over every little thing is a disgrace. I don't want to hear another word about a divorce."
Riley offered a bitter, agonizing smile.
They knew she had been wronged, yet they still demanded she swallow it.
She wanted to escape this living hell, and they were forcibly holding her down.
Was this truly for her own good, or was it out of their own selfish greed, refusing to let go of the Landon family's wealth and status?
Riley knew the answer perfectly well. She wiped away her tears, her voice unwavering. "Nobody is going to stop me from getting this divorce."
If they didn't love her, she had to love herself.
"Have you lost your mind?!" George roared, springing to his feet and raising his hand as if to strike her.
Riley stood up. She didn't flinch or retreat; she simply raised her chin. "Hit me. Beat me to death. I am still getting this divorce."
George trembled with rage. His raised hand clenched into a tight fist in the air, but ultimately, he didn't swing. Instead, he delivered a crushing ultimatum. "If you dare go through with this divorce, don't ever call me Dad again."
Elaine shot up from the sofa as well, furious. "And don't call me Mom, either! I'll act like I never raised you!"
Riley's eyelashes fluttered. She stared at Elaine and George in utter disbelief. "You're... throwing me away?"
"We aren't throwing you away; you're the one who clearly doesn't respect us as your parents. You treat everything we say like garbage. What kind of daughter is this ungrateful?" Elaine demanded angrily.
Riley's fingers curled slightly. "I'll listen to you on anything else. But not this. I can't."
Elaine hadn't expected Riley to hold her ground even after such a severe threat. She felt like her lungs were about to explode. "Fine! Just perfect! You think you're so independent now. You don't need us anymore. Great! The moment you sign those divorce papers, we're severing all ties with you!"
